I was in my early college years during the fight against apartheid. I don't remember a lot about it and never knew a lot of Mandela's background. Over the years, I only heard the great things of Mandela until the last few, where I heard more of his political leanings and terrorism.
We have friends who were missionaries in various parts of Africa, and now as directors, they have a home in South Africa. My parents visited a few years ago. They said Johannesburg is a beautiful city but security is high. Soweto has turned into a hellhole. Very unsafe and shanty towns throughout.
I'm really quite ignorant of the history. I hope those in harms way after his death will remain safe. The brutality in some of these African nations really knows no bounds.
