Yes, some people are hurting and a lot of it can be blamed on themselves. My work at a local ministry proves that every time I'm there.
We cannot give out checks to the needy for utility bills or prescription any longer. Why? Because two of those good 'needy' folks we handed checks to decided to use our routing and number to defraud us. Another tried changing the amount we wrote on the check.
Every time I work we have those who come in with fake addresses and other lies. We have those who bitch about the type of food we give them or the kind of clothes we provide. They'll pick out a 50 cent shirt or $1 pair of shoes and try to brow beat the cashier into charging the 10 cents because "that's all they worth." A guy who was working on my roof one week and telling me how good he had it here in GA sent his wife to the ministry the next week saying they had no income. These type of people don't care that they're making it hard for the ones who actually need help or that they're ripping off a damn charity.
Yeah, some people are hurting out there and too many of them are getting freebies and government bennies by lying and cheating. I like what I do, but man, sometimes it gets me soured on some representatives of the human race.
