Paula Deen reminds me of the democrats I grew up around, family and friends. My Dad was a union man through-n-through. My mother was a housewife. They weren't bad people at all. They were just really unaware of the ways of the real world. They weren't actually bigots either. They just had no reason to think about black people one way or the other. As long as the black folk stayed on their side of the highway, everything was right with the world.
What does being a person 30 years ago have to do with people that have in that time been educated and changed their minds in the last years have to do with a freaking cook ?
Who says using words in the language used at that time is a raciest ?? Just a word you know, sticks and stones as I was taught.
I once asked Hubby if he being raised in the city of Haverhill Mas. was ever called a Wop. He had no idea what I was talking about. He also had no idea what a greaser or A spade or Crow was. He had heard the N word but felt more poor whites were the white N's then the blacks.
Now he was over 50 years old when I asked him, this man had had no idea what I was talking about. I did not know him until he was in his late 40's he had lived in Waco TX for a few years but had no idea what a Spic was. He had somehow survived all those years without coming into contact with any racists.
I began to wonder if this man just wasn't paying attention or if he was afraid to tell me the truth. Nope after 20 years I see he has no problem with anyone if they are honest.
Me as a Navy brat traveling about I heard most every word casting aspersion on others and coming home at last was called a Frog.
I rebelled as kids will and set out to meet everyone as different from me and my kids. We had a ball, met some cultures that we still today follow a few times a year and we eat the foods of every culture except dog meat, goats eyes or grubs and snake, sorry Texas rattle snake is not on my menu, nor is bull testicle.
