COLUMBIA, S.C. —  When school officials in Rock Hill, South Carolina, tell graduation ceremony crowds to hold their applause until the end, they mean it — Police arrested seven people after they were accused of loud cheering during the ceremonies.

Six people at Fort Mill High School's graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct, authorities said. Police said the seven yelled after students' names were called.

"I just thought they were going to escort me out," Jonathan Orr told The Herald of Rock Hill. "I had no idea they were going to put andcuffs on me and take me to jail."

Orr, 21, spent two hours in jail after he was arrested when he yelled for his cousin at York's commencement at the Winthrop University Coliseum.

Rock Hill police began patrolling commencements several years ago at the request of school districts who complained of increasing disruption. Those attending graduations are told they can be prosecuted for bad behavior and letters are sent home with students, said Rock Hill police spokesman Lt. Jerry Waldrop.

Last year in Galesburg, Illinois, five students were denied diplomas from the city's lone public high school after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement. Students could get their diplomas after completing eight hours of public service for the school district.

They punish these kids for what someone else does?  WTH???   :banghead:

What is with this?   It is supposed to be a party for the kids, right?   there was lots of cheering at my graduation.  I got some myself. 

pretty soon "educator" will be an insult along the lines of looser, clusterf\/<ker, and hopeless dolt.

It can't extend the evening too long to let the kids enjoy themselves a bit.

Such displays of "enthusiasm" can be very annoying and disruptive.  This article does not paint a clear picture of the events which lead to the necessity to have the police stop the "enthusiasm".  I'll bet it wasn't as arbitrary as the lack of information leads the reader to believe.

When does the right to "whoop 'n hollar" stop and the right to enjoy a civilized graduation ceremony begin?  When did applause stop being enough to express approval and enthusiasm?

The "enthusiasm" probably did go too far at previous graduations, IMO.  But that doesn't justify the zero tolerance option which took this in the opposite direction.

Regardless of the rules, I can't see how they can get away with punishing the graduates for what someone else does during the ceremony.

I agree 100%.  The last graduation I went to had to be really embarassing for the kids.  The parents, friends, and relatives in the crowd were acting like complete morons.  Look at me look at me I am an attention whore who can't shut the hell up for 30 freaking minutes look at me look at me!!!!!!

I have just returned from a graducation ceremony in Charleston SC it would have been better if they had just mailed the diplomas and skipped the so called "ceremony" which turned out to be a whooping, whistling, hollering free for all complete with air horns. If I were the speaker reading names I would not have continued past Abbot.

This doesn't fall under NORMAL PCism retardation (and yes I use that term to be unPC), but rather, just a STRANGE kind of retardation. There is no explanation for this.

When someone says they are an "educator" I immediately know they are uneducated and incompetent, protected by a union that promotes ignorance and self-aggrandizement and cares nothing about the actual education of our youth. 

If they say "teacher" they get my respect.

I have no problem with what the schools are doing, according to the article there was plenty of notice to the families that poor behavior would not be tolerated.  Action meet consequence.  For every moroon that can't shut the f* up there is another family that misses their son/daughter's name called, there is no excuse for one person's joy to ruin another person's moment.
