Boy Suspended for Bringing Swiss Army Knife on School Camping Trip

Apr 28, 2013
By Todd Starnes

A 10-year-old California boy was suspended and threatened with expulsion after he brought a Swiss Army Knife on a week-long school school camping trip.

Tony Bandermann told Fox News that his son Braden was on a science camping trip with his class at Garden Gate Elementary School in Cupertino, Calif.

Braden with the Swiss Army Knife that got him in trouble.

According to a school incident report, the boy showed the small knife to other students who then reported him to teachers. The incident report stated that law enforcement was also notified. However, no charges were filed.

Bandermann, who was out-of-town on a business trip, said he received a telephone call from the school’s principal informing him that his son had violated the school’s weapons policy. The punishment, she told him, must be immediate and severe.

“She threatened to expel him,” he said. “She kept telling me, ‘you can’t bring a weapon to school.’ A Swiss Army Knife is a tool not a weapon.”

How long will we tolerate this shit?

Idiocy reigns, and it's growing exponentially

Training up some good little drones for the state.  Turn in your family, friends and neighbors.

Hitler would be so proud.

I was always big for my age and also one of the youngest in my grade as a result of not attending 'kindergarten'.  In the spring of my third grade year I got a bicycle, a 26 inch Schwinn with coaster brake and basket.  That summer I began my first regular job replacing a ner-do-well neighbor on his paper route for a "couple weeks" during his summer vacation which turned permanent shortly after I began.

Back then paper bundles came tied with a very strong fiber twine, the knot was almost impossible to untie, and the twine impossible to break.  One's only hope was a jackknife.  I have carried a one ever since then.  I was cautioned about the do's and don't associated with carrying a knife and never carved a desk nor took an innocent life.

I realize how amazing and unsettling this revelation will be to some, but I even carried it by mistake once while on jury duty.  It was unsettling to the Balif when I mentioned it to him on recess after I realized my mistake.  (Jurors didn't have to go through the metal detector on the way into the jury room but you did when you came back from recess for some strange reason I have yet to understand).    I mean, it was a slip and fall case and I held no animosity for the plaintiff nor defendant for Pete sake. :thatsright:

(Plaintiff was trying to hose defendant but that's a just a low rent Dummy for ya , stick it to the man mentality.  We found Comparative Negligence because of another DUmmy on the jury holding out for the same reason, stick it to the man, he's got it mentality.   Hummm, maybe that's why they didn't want jurors to have weapons. That juror was a real A-hole. :whistling:)

How do students actually go on a camping trip without a Swiss Army Knife of some sort ??

The Adult teachers, did they have any way other then bare hands to set up camp ???  Was this a sterilized camp, everything set up before hand for the students and all they had to do was walk in to tents set up and and Porto Porty's in place.??   Were the tables and chairs in place and a big BBQ gas run ready to cook for them ???

This is NOT camping, this is akin to a summer camp where the kids come to have most everything done for them.

Camping is an experience of learning to survive in the wilds.   A tarp, cord, a knife, first aid kit, a trenching tool and a roll of toilet paper. Perhaps a small pot to boil water, and in today's world a half dozen Bic's to start a cooking fire.

What are these people thinking that sending kids into the wild without the tools they need to learn to use themselves is a good thing.

Total disgust at this so called camping trip did no more then give the kids a night to sleep on the ground.

True, the kid wasn't physically in school.

HOWEVER (and this is the part that the principal was focused on), a school OUTING carries with it the same rules and regs as physically being in the brick and mortar school.

This particular principal is single-mindedly stupid because she hasn't quite figured out that a camping trip necessitates the use of camp tools, which, oddly enough, usually involves the use of a knife of some sort.

What I'd like to know is, who brought the axe? And WHERE THE HELL IS JASON?!?  ELEVENTY!!11111

Agreed!!!  I just can't imagine camping without a Swiss Army knife. What if he sharpened a stick for roasting mallows? Would he be expelled?
