well, my wife applied for assistance yesterday.
Well, Bills are starting to really overwhelm us and with my wife fed grand jury duty and her work place being a$$ about giving her hours so we need help.

Columbia gas sent us a paper telling us to go to this location to apply for help.

Thursday she goes to the the address instructed on the letter and charity isn't there. They had moved and the company now at the location did in fact try to help my wife to locate the new address of the charity. No luck. My wife called the charity and kept getting the answering machine. She wasn't able to go get help.

Friday she called the charity again. Got a hold of someone. They told her where to go and they squeezed her in.

She brought with her the letter from the gas company our pay stubs and our rent agreement. This is what others told her she would need. Not the letter or Charities told her what she would need to bring.

The woman at the charity did say she had been trying to get the gas company to change the address for 4 years and that it would happen may first because the gas company had such a out dated system that was just finally going to updated. She explained they needed another pay stub for us basically the 2 most recent ones. we needed to make a $150.00 payment to the gas company (which was hard to do...we had to ask for help with this from her mother.) she also had to apply for crisis assistance and they needed a copy of the gas bill. So my wife rush to get the majority of that done for the charity. got the payment made brought the other two payments and gas bill. She than went to apply for crisis help at the welfare office. Filled out the application than she was rather rudely told that the 4 pay stubs wasn't good enough that they needed ALL of March pay stubs not the two recent ones and IF don't get it would hold everything up. My ex manager has been rather a jerk not giving me and a few co-worker (now at a sister property) our pay stubs since we got direct deposit. He refused to give us these stubs for a good year or answer my co-worker's question about his pay decrease.

My wife felt depressed, humiliated and just cried at the way this woman attitude was at the welfare office like who the hell are you to ask for this help.

Our system and country is really ****ED UP!! and caps doesn't do that term justice. Things are really screwed up in this country. My wife is just so disheartened by everything that has happened to us she is getting into a depression.

My wife and I have always felt there were those who needed this help more than we do. We have no children and we normally have always muddled through. Seeing the process one needs to do to get help it made my wife upset as well. She felt like she was jumping through hoops NO one said (look you need to have this.) She had to guess and why the hell are certain pay stubs needed for one form and other pay stubs needed to other help when all this is basically connected all together. You have to go to at least 2 different places and can't apply for one without the other.

When my wife's pen pal from England had to apply last year for assistance last year in England and the story she told was in fact a different experience than my wife went through yesterday. England seem to be kinder and not so judgmental to this woman.

The Corporate and Uber rich have basically broken my wife's faith in this country.

What a total waste of blood.

It's incredible and awful that so many jobs don't pay a living wage, that there are so few jobs, and the wealthy have so much privilege.

And I'm so sorry that you have to go through this!

Can she plead hardship? This episode proves that she has served above and beyond her civic duty. A person should not have to face financial ruin because of such an oppressive "obligation"!

I wish you much better than you and she are receiving from this country.

I hated applying for food stamps 4 years ago, but thank goodness we were able to get them.

You probably sold them for 50 cents on the dollar for a bottle of Red Ripple.

Yeah it is awful that so many people can't live comfortably on one middle class income like they used to be able to.  Why is that?  

Go back 50 years and add up all the Federal and State mandates that have added to the cost of living.   Also, look at what people were contented to have back then,  as compared to now.

These morons think that all they have to do is walk in to the wellfare office & ask for money.  They are shocked that  they have to prove they actually need the money.  If he had spent the time researching on the innertubes that he spent whining on DU, his wife might have had the necessary documentation.   If you don't have the competence to apply for assistance, perhaps it is time to pull the plug.  Mewling puking puss bubbles.

Hey DUmmies - this is the not the fault of corporations and the rich people.

This is YOUR fault.  This is what you voted for.  Perhaps ten years or so ago when you had to "muddle" through, you could have improved your lot in life.  Perhaps you could have taken better care of yourself.  Many people with diabetes work and live full lives.  While muddling through, you could have furthered your education or worked harder to move up.

Weak people blame others for their lot in life, and your life will always be this way.

the pain is overwhelming and I cannot go on like this anymore. Im 57 and haven't eaten anything for three days and am trying to starve to death right now. Done. No healthcare. No doctor. No meds. Top that with three abscessed teeth and you get the idea.

I believe the states run the assistance programs--at least the local offices. The feds fund it however. When my ex first left, at some point I was panicked enough to at least make sure I could keep food in the kids' bellies and of course we had a shoe in since my autsie was already receiving services via MRDD and Medicaid based on his disability. I was never treated rudely, but we had dealt with the same caseworker who worked on his medicaid in conjunction with MRDD. Of course, there are rude people working out there. I just don't see where this one gets the link of it being some corporate type or rich persons' fault that his wife PERCEIVED she was treated like this. it sucks to be on hard times; I have a feeling he is deflecting onto others so as not to have to take responsibility for the part he contributed to his wife being in her depressive state over the current way things are going. Perhaps since his wife is under so much of a burden, he should consider carrying some of that weight himself instead of just pissing and moaning on an internet board over how hard she has it. He can actually do something tangible to help instead of leaving it all on her, but I guess 'helping' to a DUer is bitching about it online to other deflectors.

I'm pretty sure they weren't Federal, from the story.  Almost all kinds of public assistance are actually administered by local branches of State agencies, or municipal ones, even if they're handing out Federal money.  The incredible lack of consistency, community organizer BS and manipulation, political influence, and just plain arbitrary results are largely due to this, since hundreds of different agencies each following their own interpretation of whatever they're handing out are involved.
