Hamburger Hill (Hill 937) has its roots going back to '66 when they (NVA) took a Special Forces Camp in the valley (A Shau). Everything in that valley seemed to be hard luck, but in the case of Hill 937 IMO it was not bad luck, but some of the worst tactics employed in Vietnam. It was a frontal assault on the hill top, which chewed up a LOT of folks, thus the Hamburger hill moniker. I went in April of 68 or at least tried to go in...we came in on a 'sling' (Chinock') late in the day maybe day 2 or 3 into the battle. We severe fire from .51 cal MG and were turned back due to systems being hit. (on a funny note: The guy next to me had taken off his flak jacket and was sitting on it. It was double thick now. We had a platoon size element aboard and were on approach when all hell broke loose, its was a radical ride, pilot got it under enough control to pull out and up over the mountains. The guy next to me, comes out of his sling seat and is grabbin his azz and dancing around like crazy...a .51 MG rd had hit, gone thru the outer skin of the sling, up thru the seat and thru his flak jacket punturing his jungle fatigues and nailing him right in the azzhole. The bullet was retained by the flak jacket he was sitting on but the point was made [no pun intended] and all he got was a burn from a very hot rd) We get back to the LZ, coughing and smoking but we got back in spite of it. I contacted higher and got shifted to another hotspot so never got back to the A Shau.
For you tactics guys there are some good books out there, but IMO someone should have got relieved for the debacle at Hamburger Hill...we finally take it but big losses that should not have occurred IMO.
So if you want to know if the guy is for real, try this: Ask him his Serial number...I have NEVER met a soldier who ever forgot it. Prior to about 72 or so IIRC we were issued a serial #, after 72 we used our SS #. My serial # was US 54761125, the US meant I was a draftee, if you joined or reenlisted you had a number that began with RA. I have used this to flush a bunch of wanna be's from various forums over the years. If they say I forgot, just not true, my dad remembered his from 1932, or if they say can't tell you its my SS# then they were late to the party after '72...
