Fort Hood nullifies the "kids will be safer with an armed guard at the school"

argument.

There were plenty of armed, trained people hanging around Fort Hood when that guy went nuts and killed nine people. And the NYC incident where two armed, trained NYPD officers shot something like twelve innocent bystanders trying to gun down one guy kind of shows that guns don't exactly keep innocent people safe, either.

Gun nuts...try again. Hint: the harder you argue, the more you make a total gun ban look good. Let us ban assault weapons. We'll feel better and you get to keep the majority of your guns. But if you think that 'armed guard in every school' thing is going to fly, you have another think coming. The NRA drastically mistook the mood of the opposition on this one. They have totally ****ed up. I live in serious gun nut country and not even here are people in support of this. And if you can't get Dixie behind putting an armed guard just about ANYWHERE, you can't get anybody behind it.

I think the NRA has made a huge misstep today.

Considering you goons hate the military and few of you actually served I can excuse your ignorance a little bit.
Military installations, Army bases for those of you at DU, have the strictest gun control that you can have. The only people walking around with loaded weapons are the MPs and any civilian law enforcement that happens to be on post. Where you get this idea that Ft Hood is like the old west where everyone carried loaded guns I have no idea, but it isn't that way.

I was on base at Fort Campbell a few weeks ago.  You have about as much chance of running into an MP as you do a regular (city) police officer.  I saw one patrol car during the 1 1/2-2 hours I was there.

Yep. I imagine most people don't even understand the size of a base either. They probably picture something about the size of a camp. I know I did before I went in. Military bases are small cities and extend for miles and miles.

I was  stationed at Ft Campbell . Unless you are training or in the field you don't have your assigned weapon with you and you do not get ammo for it till your on the range or in the field to get blanks for training. The weapons stay in the arms room including any that are personally owned  unless you are in post housing unless that changed too.

I thought that if you lived on post, whether barracks or housing that all firearms were to be kept in the arms room. I could be mistaken though it was a long time ago. I do know that it applied for the barracks.

I was there from 80-83 and from 85-86 so it may have changed

I doubt it.  I don't expect they let anyone keep their weapons on base housing.

It's kind of subject to the local garrison commander's preferences, but a lot of bases do let permanent party in family housing keep weapons in their homes, however there is strict registration and you may be ordered to intern them at the arms room at any time at what amounts to the whim of your unit commander.  You also can't take them out of the quarters except to go directly to or from an approved use like hunting, recreational range shooting if there is a range handy, repairs, or sale/purchase.

Troops going through deployment processing may or may not have their assigned personal weapon with them, depending on the mob station and the means of transportation that will move them on from there, but they absolutely won't have any ammo for those weapons on them during the processing.

They're all hiding in the bushes.  :-)

BTW, most CONUS military installations have gone to civilians. I haven't seen an MP at a gate since I was at Ft. Wainwright, which is technically OCONUS for some reason.

So the NRA is insane for wanting to put armed guards in the schools but when the former impeached president suggested it that was brilliant.

Merely history they have not revised yet.

Yeah, they consider Alaska OCONUS.  Guess cause it's separated by Canada, or some shit.  The (D)Ullard conception of military installations as armed camps with rifles at stack arms and on-duty folks running around with those junk M-9s is waaaaaayyyy off the mark.  As a non-MP, the only time I was under arms in peacetime was when I pulled pay guard in Iwakuni, JA, issued a M-1911A1 w/two magazines.  We were still paying cash then (overseas only) and no bill larger than a $20.00, due to counterfeiting.
