Something special I did on Thanksgiving 2012
« on: November 22, 2012, 09:42:53 PM »
Most of us stuff our faces with turkey and other deliciousness. But today was extra special for me. Today Mum, I and another wonderful couple of friends went to Pease Military Airport. What a wonderful experience!!

I guess this is the first stop on US soil that our troops make, before going to another major airport, and flying out to their prospective homebase airports. Some of these soldiers have been flying 2 straight days!! A couple(married)The Husband was in North Afghanistan and the wife in North of same country. They met up in (Bakra?) flew to Kuwait, then to Italy and then Pease.
They were not expecting us!! They figured people would be home, cooking. But what a great turnout! They were about 200 greeters that came. Some came with their dogs.

Alot of the soldiers were openly emotional and others were in shock. Some of the soldiers I talked to were from various areas. one from Carlisle, Pa, Denver, CO, Sandiego, CA and Atlanta , GA. Some of them won't be home till tomorrow, because of flight schedule. :(
Here are some pics

How wonderful!  I've always wanted to be part of one of those welcoming crowds.

What a wonderful thing to do!!!

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.

Thanks for "your" service.  I'm sure you felt it was the least you could do but, the positive effect you made on those young troops can't be measured.  I remember being bussed over to the PX at Travis AFB in 1970 to buy civies for the flight home.

That's great.  I didn't know people did that.

Just got back from some traveling a few hours ago.  Got to see lots of military kids going here and there.  I wish I could show my appreciation in a more tangible way beyond thanking them.

Check in your local paper.  We have a Marine MP unit at Corpus Christi that rotated groups in and out of Afghanistan  & we welcomed them at the airport and the base every deployment.  In our little coastal town we have Wounded Warriors visit for fishing trips & a good chunk of the town turns out & lines the street with flags while they are escorted in by about 100 motorcycles from local clubs.

I am not sure if there are always that many greeters all the time, or because it was a special day.
