OHH that smell
« on: November 19, 2012, 08:51:11 AM »
Ever notice as the temperatures go down smells get stronger ????

A chemist can explain this I hope but it was brought home to me today by my Cats.

Last spring when it began to warm up I bought a tub of catnip. As it was getting warmer in the house I I gave it no thought and put a few spoon fulls   in a old sock.   Cats were interested in it for a time but I finally tossed it in the toy bin as they no longer had interest.

Hubby messed up the thermostat last night and set the heat to 62.   Out of no where the cats began to race about the house acting like hooligans, 2 twenty pound Coon Cats acting like those in a biker bar fight.

In the middle of the floor was the sock they had pulled out of the toy box.  The female acted like she was in heat,  butt in the air and tail all a swishing back and forth.  Male no where to be seen.

Both cats fixed so this was a new one on me.   I put on extra clothes as I was cold and slowly raised the heat watching the two beasts.   Very odd, both giving me the evil eye, acting so out of character.   My cats were stoned.

Here this sock had set at the bottom of the toy box for 7 months with little notice and now they find it ????

I use to wonder why frying Bacon on a cool morning smelled so good, coffee perking had that that great smell.

Got to be an explanation on why smell is heightened when the temperature goes down.

I find the exact opposite with regards to temperature and the things you mentioned are fresh smells and ones that probably aren't competing with the smells that come out in the warmth. That's probably the key: there is less for smells to compete with in the winter. I usually smell the musty dampness from snow boots in and out the car when it was up.
