That is an Observation Post (OP) along the border between West and East Germany in 1962. The Soldiers are Cavalry Scouts assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The 3rd ACR deployed to Europe in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Those Cav Troopers truly held the line, in the Cold War that was never really cold.
The primary mission of that OP: observe a specific section of the border and report any troops, equipment, or activity. Secondary mission: engage enemy troops who enter their field of fire with the M60 machine gun.
I find parallels to the relationship between CC and the DUmp.
