primitives discuss exercise

Oh my.

From the "exercise and fitness" forum on Skins's island.

It's a pretty safe bet one's not going to find the Las Vegas Leviathan or the subway cat hanging around here--or in the "jobs" forum either.

Since July 4th I have dropped 15 lb and my resting heart rate has gone from 72 bpm to 56 bpm

I've been riding my bicycle all along for shopping and errands but on July 4th I decided to start training for fitness. To that end I have been riding an hour a day at an exertion level which for the most part does not force me to open my mouth to breathe. I have seen my average speed increase from about 11 mph to 15 mph and my weight and resting pulse rate have both dropped significantly.

I have two training loops within easy riding range of my home, one is around a large football/baseball/soccer complex parking lot that's deserted 90% of the time, this loop is fairly flat and pedaling is constant and I never have to drop below or go above the middle range of my 24 gears. The second loop I ride has a couple of hills that approach San Francisco levels of climbing and I'm using the entire 24 gears and really only pedaling for effect about 50% of the time since in the direction I ride the loop the climbs are considerably more severe than the drops and I'm in first gear all the way up. One hill on that two mile loop I can still only make it up without getting off and walking on the first lap, after that I have to get off about 3/4 of the way up and walk the rest of it.

The flat loop I'm doing an average of five days a week and the hilly one I'm doing about twice a week. I see white tail deer every time I ride the hilly loop, it's in a "horse subdivision" where a lot of the homes have significant pasture/patches of woods and quite a few have horses and there are deer all over it, that makes for an interesting and picturesque ride to help distract me from the pain of climbing those steep hills.

Exercise just for the sake of exercise has always bored the crap out of me but I find bike riding to be enjoyable and much easier to maintain a regimen with. I have an old Ab Lounger and a weight bench but finding the motivation to use them regularly is still hard, the freedom of jumping on the bike and just pedaling away looking at nature with the breeze in my face is like a siren call compared to huffing and puffing in one spot.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd share my story to help motivate me a bit and possibly help someone else with the motivation to get out and start doing something that's a bit more fun for me at least than lots of other exercise options.

Kudos for what you're doing, but good luck with the boldened part of your last paragraph.

Primitives don't want to exercise to get into better health; primitives more usually want drugs to chemicalize themselves into "better" health.  It's easier, drugs.

1. That's impressive. How close are you to your desired weight?

2. About half way, started near 220 and I'm at about 203 right now.

If I can get to 185 I'll be happy with that, I'm 5'11" and sixtysomething.

My weight loss has slowed to a crawl but I'm definitely dropping fat and gaining muscle, probably will have to do that for a while before I lose much more weight.

I have gone with the Primal Blueprint style diet as outlined at marksdailyapple dot com but I'm not a fanatic about it. I blew it big time yesterday in fact since I had a lot to accomplish in kind of emergency mode and didn't have time to prepare food much.

You know, I wonder how the primitive does that, getting a resting heart-rate of 56.

Damn.

I can't even get my resting heart-rate down to 72, my goal.

The blood pressure's usually 110-90/62-52, but damn, damn, damn, the lowest heart-rate I've ever managed was 74.  On the flip side of the coin, it's never measured over 88; it's generally stuck about 78-82, and pretty routine, pretty steady.

Medical professionals tell me not to worry about it, but I wonder.

That could be your nicotine intake talking to you.

Well, yeah, I will be forthright and admit, that does bother me; more than I let on here.

But damn, without it, I got no energy, no get-up-and-go.

I have the same problem. When I was an iron worker my heart rate was in the low sixties. Doing real estate and unable to break my nicotine habit my heart rate is now in the mid seventies. It happens.

I just switched to a new gym, and the young lady who runs it did a body-fat measurement and we found I am at 15.5%, 195 lbs, 5'8", and two weeks shy of 70, resting heart rate 52.

We now are developing a program to enable me to enter (in the senior's division, generally over 40) the 'physique' judging in body-building competitions.  This physique judging in the men's body-building is relatively new, and as it gains popularity the age groups should expand into participants closer to my age.

The judging is on appearance and definition, rather than musculature/bulk (The Hulk, Ahnold, etc).  I use free weights, and ride a bicycle on the local roads 17 - 25 miles per ride.

edited to add: My gym person warned me that if I do compete, I'll need to drop to about 4 - 5% body fat, while maintaining my weight at 185 - 190, a good weight for me.

Well, the Navy's almost as good as the Marines, so it's pretty good guess I made.

I know one former Navy guy, probably in his 50s, with a pot-belly, but that's the only one I know who doesn't appear in tip-top shape.  Veterans of the Navy are all over the place, up here.

The neckbearded big guy over there in Bellevue is a veteran of McHale's Navy, and Combat!, but is about as flabby as one can be and still be ambulatory.

24 speeds? JohnnyReb's childhood bicycle, which he had to work and save for, was only one speed and he went up and down over hills without getting off. dismounting any problems.

You have to be careful about everything so as not to overly excite the DUmmie queers.

I rowed over there to check, and you're right.  That campfire is all but abandoned, with only three primitives dancing around it.

Exercise is as much work as work, though, so I didn't figure I'd see much activity.

That reminded me of something, and I went over to where the Las Vegas Leviathan used to post, using that stupid screen-name "Ege Bamyasi."

He had some really good stuff there, in his journal, great material.

But it appears that last month, he "edited" out everything, leaving just a "." for his comments.

One wonders what's up with that.

Fortunately, all those gems of his are still preserved, here in the DUmpster.

4-5% is about right for competition (cut) shape.  Sucks to lose the mass.

I could put out an APB to see if anybody has a shot of the Las Vegas Leviathan, one of those that he posted of his own self.

But you know, there's only one conclusion one can draw from this, the Las Vegas Leviathan deleting a wealth of his information.  Regretfully, one must reasonably conclude that his enterprise--losing circa 300 pounds--failed, and that quite possibly he's back to 519 pounds, or even more.

If he was still losing, he'd be boasting about it, wanting to shove it in our faces.

I say he's probably gained it all back, and about 20% more to boot, so he's probably tipping the [truck] scales somewhere in the neighborhood of  600 pounds.

He will probably have to send off for bigger toilet lid shoes, since he is now smashing his feet down even more, so we'll throw another 'E' onto his 15EEEEE toilet lid shoes, and make them 15EEEEEE.
