Bullcrap, DUmmie.  They may want to see that your reliable and stable.  They don't want to invest a year training a person on all of the aspects of their business just so the person can go decide to do something else in a year.  Do you wanna know why I know that DUmmies?  I ask hiring managers, when I talk to them, about questions exactly like that.

Hiring managers do not care if you have a gap in employment or if you were laid off in this economy, though they might consider what your last employer has to say.  When they ask me about my last employer, I hand them five years of ratings marked exceeds and two letters of recommendation from former bosses.  DUmmies bemoan the economy.  I have two employers bidding for my services and probably two more by the end of the week.

I have noticed that more and more employers are asking for five and even ten year work histories. It used to be standard that you gave three years of your work history but not any more. Anything past the 8 year mark for me though gets tough because most of the employers have gone out of business.

Easy for me:  I worked at the same place for 30 years.

Hard for me:  They are all dead now.

It's not that you can't have a gap, they want the gaps explained too.  That's all, DUmmie.  You should jot down how many years you have been a member of DU, including your screen name.  The employer would appreciate that.

I hope someone that gets a work VISA due to the DREAM act gets the job.

I'm sure they won't have any problem with the questions and will be a much better employee.

Don't ever get a job with the government then.  For a security clearance, you'll have to go back seven or ten years depending on the level sought.
