More retirees see SS checks reduced for student loans

For Unpaid College Loans, Feds Dock Social Security
More retirees are falling behind on student debt, and Uncle Sam is coming after their benefits.

*Lots of cut and paste follows.

Why didn't these retirees take care of their debt before retirement?  If they took on the debt afterwards, then why did they do that?

1. As this bubble bursts we will either see a massive reform of this corporate welfare program or

the final collapse of the U.S.

If someone has only $100 it doesn't matter if they owe $1,000,000, they only have $100 and the debt will not make $1,000,000 somehow appear. This is the definition of intractable and something will inevitably give.
K&R

Do tell us where corporate welfare plays any part in this?

3. How can someone continue to exist with reduced Social Security?

You can't have euthanasia, but it is OK to starve someone.

Mitt Romney will be eligible for SS benefits when he retires.

19. Many are not in debt for their *own* educations...

Many of these retirees aren't even in hock for their own educations. Consumer advocates say that in the majority of the cases they've seen, the borrowers went into debt later in life to help defray education costs for their children or other dependents.

It was loans for children and grandchildren and such.

Well, thanks for the explanation.  Moocher children and grandchildren .

This endentured servitude is criminal.

Entering into a lawful contract is not indentured servitude.  The smarterest people on the interwebs should know that.

7. Sorry for another reply, but everyone here should note that Mitt

Romney has an IRA worth $100 million.

So?

No way in hell should SS be subject to garnishment. This country really does not give a shit about anyone.

The number of these cases have went up under Obama.  Didn't Obama take over student loans?

10. So, if people default on their loans, who should eat the tab?

At some point, somone has to be able to come get money that is owed. In the end, the borrower signed the paperwork to borrow all that money. If, at no point, anyone is allowed to collect that debt (forcefully if need be) then that encourages more people to flake out on their loans.

I do believe that if people take out student loans, they should be required to pay for them.

11. Thank you Scrooge -

I'm sure they'll appreciate that thought after you've down-sized their jobs, taken their homes, and attached a lien to their Social Security. You know this system is only going to work for you until people are fed up. There are 99% of us and 1% of you. Keep that in mind.

15. I have student loans and I have an (underwater) mortgage.

I'm not just going to flake off my responsibilities that I agreed to. I'm going to have to stick it out and pay off the debt. If I lose my job, I'll likely lose my house. If I fail to pay off my student loans before I retire... any income I recieve will likely be garnished.

I understand those terms and I won't complain about the consequences should it happen. That should be the nature of an agreement. And I believe that it's 100% ok to complain and protest about the circumstances that lead someone up to such situations... that's fine. But if your checks are being garnished because they failed to pay prior debts, all I can ask is, "Well what did you expect?"

16. Right ... and I have a bridge to sell you in the middle of Texas.

Legally you are correct, morally you are bankrupt. There are many like you in this country and I expect nothing less with capitalism held up as a paragon of virtue. Eventually though conditions will come to the breaking point and then folks will finally come to their senses. I know which side I'm on, and I'm pretty sure I know which side you are on as well.

23. And I think education should cost the same as it does in civilized countries so that people don't

have to sign away their futures just to get one. I think colleges should not be paying over $300,000 to their administrators. And I think board members of colleges should have no Corporate ties I think they should all be educators.

It's not just administrators that make big bucks.

Last fall, Warren taught only one class at Harvard Law, yet she enjoys an annual salary of $350,000 — this is in addition to nearly $200,000 in royalties and consulting fees she earned while taking a leave from her academic job to help found president Obama’s Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Maybe all professors and other instructors should make much less.

Hey DUmmies! Guess who originates and handles all FAFSA student loans now? If you answered "the federal government" you win today's prize. Banks can give loans, but not through the FAFSA program anymore. They have to be done separately and are credit dependent.

And the banks can't get their hands on your SS check either.

I'm wondering when ABM will forgive all loans to get the student vote.

Please, tell me once more why it's such a great idea to have the government in charge of some of your retirement funds.

They're really this stupid?  HEY LURKING DUMMIES:

The government took over the student loans.  They now have the power to dock the paltry SS check.  It's all in their hands now.  You applaud this shit.

It is indeed ironic, isn't it?

The primitives wanted the big old greedy banks out of the business, and so the government took it over.

And now the primitives are whining about what the government's doing, something that the big old greedy banks never had the power to do.

It sucks to be a primitive.

The worlds most smartest and talentedest people do know that king obanga nationalized the student loan market and that is why the SS checks can be garnished.

I like this as the bottom feeders that went through college on student loans and got some useless degree or did not graduate at all will now pay the price for what they thought they stole from the rest of us.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

No, DUmbass. People that deposit money in the banks, want it back.
It's ours, not theirs, and we expect deadbeats to give back what they borrowed from US.
