California Proposes Tax On Driving

California Proposes Tax On Driving
GPS devices would record mileage and charge drivers accordingly

A California transportation agency recently proposed what could become the most unpopular tax of all time: A tax for simply driving your car.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission of San Francisco is behind the idea and has said that the tax would work by installing GPS units into cars to track the miles that they travel. The vehicle owners would then be charged accordingly, with low-income drivers exempted.

The hope is that a VMT (vehicle miles traveled) tax would cut down on pollution and traffic congestion, while raising funds for things like road construction and surface repair.

Randy Rentschler, spokesman for the MTC, said that the group knew the proposal could be a longshot and could take a long time to implement. Theoretically, it could take up to a decade before the plan would be rolled out in full force.

"I don't want to say it's pie in the sky. A VMT charge is really an option for the future to be looked at and considered," he said.

Given the very low popularity gas taxes have been met with in the past, the proposed driving tax seems like a very bold move. Consumers hate frequently being reminded of taxes when they gas up, but this VMT charge would take that to a whole new level.

The Association of Bay Area Governments is slated to analyze a study of the proposal on Thursday.

California residents are sure to watch this one closely.

...Wow.

Not that I think this bill could ever get passed (it would be career suicide for whatever politicians voted it in), but just the implications of the government tracking everywhere we go is scary as hell.

It might inspire more people to take the bus though.

And the DUmmies don't like it, yet not one of them will realize that this is a leftist idea. They vote for people who think like this, then get pissed when they do it.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

They have to propose crap like this to force people onto the high speed rail that they approved that will end up bankrupting the state.

And even when that DOES happen California will still vote the Dems that did it to them right back into office.
The libs/dems of today are the Quislings of former years. The cowards who would vote a fraud into office in exchange for handouts from the devil.

And just what do you believe will happen when the gov't starts paying for all your healthcare?  Are you so stupid to not realize they're going to track that as well?

Is the DUmmie saying that a DUmmie driving a prius a hundred miles will be taxed the same as a Hummer driver for the same distance?
Heh, suck it, DUmmies.  :lmao:

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Democrats are great explorers...always exploring for some new way or something new to tax.

With how long they been talking about doing this, I am surprised that it is getting pushed. It is just another way for the Dems to suck money out of people.

When you think about it, Obamacare is just a way of taxing living, or to put it another way, taxing breathing.

Yeppers...and we had to pass it to find out that was what it was...a new tax bill.

Well, if you think about it; Dems are socialists/communists, so they would have find all kinds of different ways to tax people to pay for all their social needs. So taxing someone to breath is really nothing out of the ordinary.

"Low-income drivers excepted" multiplies the already-numerous ways to scam this by a factor of at least five.

Let's see...they already have something like that...it's called the...get this... "GAS TAX!"

That is the "fairest" way of finding out how much you "drive" because gas is a fixed commodity. In fact, it is fairer than a VMT, because if you drive an SUV or GOP-type car like a V8, then you pay more per mile, while your Democrat-type car, the Yugo and the Prius, you pay less. So we ALREADY have a tax in place!

SO...what does the government REALLY WANT?

The government wants an itemized location record of EVERY TRIP YOU MAKE. In addition, such records may even be able to use for retroactive speeding tickets, or they can use it in any number of ways to screw you.

That's why VMT will never happen, even in Socialist California.
