I served on a jury once, Heroin dealer this kid was early twenties and came into the court room wearing jeans halfway down his ass, sneakers untied and a hooded sweatshirt.
After the initial formalities in front of the judge he proceeded to put his head down on the table and not pay attention for the rest of the trial. The only supporters he had in the courtroom were his lawyer. We deliberated for about three minutes and after looking at the evidence which was some little cellophane bags with Red lips imprinted on the outside, a powder inside, video and numerous law enforcement officials involved in the bust.
Guilty.
After the verdict we were sent back to the jury room where the judge came in and thanked us for our service and time and then said that this was not the first, second or third time this individual has been in his courtroom. When asked what the punishment would be he said that we could go to the audience side of the court to hear. I decide to salvage the remainder of the day and go home but I always wondered if it was another slap on the wrist.
The upside to serving is that you are free and clear for three years in Massachusetts.
