But the day's events weren't all rosy for the president.

By mid-afternoon, protesters gathered in the plaza next to the Eastland Hotel, across Congress Street from the Portland Museum of Art, decrying the swankiness of the fund-raiser.

Attendees to the sold-out dinner included Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine; her husband, S. Donald Sussman; Pingree's daughter, Hannah Pingree, a former state legislator; Rep. Michael Michaud, D-Maine; former Gov. John Baldacci, D-Maine; and Small Business Administration chief Karen Mills.

Sussman is a frequent Democratic donor and owner of MaineToday Media, which includes the Portland Press Herald.

In response to the high-priced gathering, Occupy Maine set up a half-dozen plastic blue tents in the plaza. The tents were adorned with written information about their cause and the unequal distribution of wealth in the country.

They also set up a soup line, with six kinds of free soup for anyone who wanted it.

"The 99 percent can't afford 'Super PACs,' so we're giving them soup," said Rachel Lyn Rumson, one of the organizers.

By 6:45 p.m., the Occupy protesters hit high volume. They banged pots and pans and chanted slogans such as "we are the 99 percent" and "banks got bailed out, we got sold out."

Doug Bowen, 66, drove more than an hour from his home in Porter to be part of the protest.

"If we get the big money out of politics, like what's going on here tonight, then we can start to make our votes count more," he said.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — President Barack Obama could be caught in an election-year bind on gay marriage, wedged between the pressure of supporters who want him to back same-sex marriage and the political perils of igniting an explosive social issue in the midst of the campaign.

Which provides yet another reminder of the danger of moving entirely away from print.  It takes time to find and burn all the books but only the blink of an eye to remove or edit the electronic.
