Admins, I have a question:

What is the stance/official policy of DU regarding a group of hosts going to an off-site forum to collude what they will do, who they will ban, etc. in a DU Group they host?

I have not seen this addressed, and to be honest, am really surprised that it yet hasn't. If there is a thread already on this, could you please post a link so I can get any answers?

2. My personal view: Does not offer transparency

I did see one groups' off site link and it seemed like anything said there could have been said in PM's.

Not to mention we have a group here for discussing hosting.

3. I seem to recall this topic coming up once or twice during the last DU3 test...

In the Host Group... I do not think the Admins ever gave any opinion on it.

4. I think the admins position is:

if it's not on DU they don't want to make it their business.

there were some DUers using their same names as here on another site bashing members and admins and the same question was asked.

5. Except in this case members are making decisions about DU on another site. This is different, jmo, than simply discussing DU offsite. I see this as circumventing the transparency that the admins seem to want as the hallmark of DU3.

6. I think if they are making Decisions about DU on another place it is the admins business. It is everyone's business on DU. We have the Host forum here that is just for discussions like that. No need to take it off site.

8. The problem is that not everyone has access to the hosts forum, so what you are saying is everyone's business excludes a large number of members.

If you are discussing problems in a group and some members of that group have access to the discussion while others don't, that seems inherently unfair to me.

10. Most members on DU have the opportunity to volunteer as hosts

So, exclusion is, at least in part, by choice. Imo, it is a lot fairer to discuss such issues in a place where there is at least a semblance of transparency than it is to have the discussions hidden away from everyone else on DU, including the admins.

Even the mod tub on DU2, which was certainly not noted for it's transparency, was not hidden from the admins. I think this last point is important since the decisions impact DU, which is always their business.

12. Good points, but, honestly, I don't think the admin could care less about this kind of thing.

On more than one occasion, Skinner has said how he is delighted to not have to deal with the petty BS that goes on here. He loves having handed it over, and I can't say I blame him.

14. You may be right that they don't care but I think that, if there were a set of hosts of a particular group who were more interested in strictly controlling the group message than they were in the good of DU, such a practice could damage the group in question.

I don't think it is ever a good idea to have private discussions pertaining to a public message board where there is absolutely no oversight. From what I have known about you, you always act in good faith. However, I don't think this is something that can be said with complete confidence about all who act as group hosts.

13. Hosts all have access to the host forum

anything that is posted there can shared. What is inherently unfair to me are hosts making decisions about DU and DUers on another site. Everyone, including the Admins are excluded from that.

The question was asked in the host forum at one time if the forum should be open for everyone on DU to read, I said it should.

11. I think so too.

As the poster above said, the system is now different. It's up to us to decide.

So if I had to cast a vote on this I'd say that making such decisions off site would be not in the best interests of the group and falls more under 'dictatorship' and all that nonsense than what it is now. And what it is now is just a time out.

7. My guess would be that admin will say that there is nothing that prohibits it.

I have previously requested some sort of mechanism for group hosts to communicate on the site. Some of the suggestions I received included establishing an off site venue for communicating among ourselves.

It is extremely cumbersome to try and discuss something with a group of other hosts and there are times when it is not appropriate to bring it up in the hosts forum. For example, a group of five hosts recently needed to discuss the blocking of several members. Some of those member were also members of the hosts forum and some weren't. It seemed really unfair to have a discussion where some could participate and others could not.

And uh-oh.

I just discovered there's a new forum on Skins's island--Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity.

I haven't checked it out yet, but I reasonably assume it's full of Hate.

The Hijab ostensibly is to prevent men from being tempted by a woman's allure. For muslim women in the company of non muslim men in America, there is little risk of that.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

It's pretty quiet in there - there's a couple of older women of the 'Spirit of Vatican II' type (i.e., aging hippies who are upset that the Church didn't utterly abandon catholicism in the '60s...anyone who posts anything of any sense gets ignored and so any even slightly inclined towards catholicism avoid it.

So they are plotting against the Admins and plotting to get others banned there on a site not controlled or owned by Derby Skimmer. Just how is Skimmer going to stop it without losing his income source?

Yeah. Just shut up and buy a star already. Skins needs just $10 more to upgrade to a better cabin on the cruise ship for his next vacation.
