If you won a lottery today, how would your life style change?

Would you buy a bigger house, a second house, a fancy car? How much money would it take for you to have everything you ever wanted?

For me: I love where I live. I'd like to pay off my loans: mortgage, kid's college loans. I'd love a dependable car. Put a new roof on the house, fix up my 40 year old kitchen and 30 year old bathrooms, put down hardwood floors and give me a green house - that's it for me!

5. It would be a rather drastic change
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 03:32 PM by quinnox
I'm not in great living conditions frankly and something that momentous would cause my lifestyle to alter in a major way. Of course, most everyone has had this fantasy of what they would do with a lottery win.

I would have three houses, one in my home city, that would be a simple condo in a building. Another house would be in the desert down near Nevada and the California border. Finally, I would have a beach house in San Diego. These houses would all be modest and not in bad taste or ostentatious.

Oh and if areally big win, nephews and nieces get school covered, as well as a kid in Mexico.

15. I'd sell my house and move closer to my daugher.
I'd by her a home with a nice backyard playscape, and I'd buy her a more dependable car. Then I'd put whatever was left in a retirement account and not worry so much about what's around the next bend in the road.

21. Move OUT of Florida and BACK to New York
Buy a big Mother/Daughter house that my daughter and her wife to be can share with me. Maybe a cabin in the mountains in Vermont too. Travel again to Ireland and the Alps. Live the rest of my old age without financial worries. No more TROPICAL anything for the rest of my life.

22. Assuming we're speaking of a win in the millions,
I'd quit my job, buy a home and land in the mountain west, and enjoy my wealth. Fancy cars, trips around the world, etc.

35. I would open a music venue/bookstore where I live
and have live music every night (mostly jazz), live readings from authors, show foreign and non-mainstream films for free and employ people and pay them a decent wage and health insurance - and I'd have health insurance myself. I wouldn't manage the club. But I know people who could, and have. The bookstore part would feature rare books, and lots and lots of books about music and art and cultural history.

I even know the building I'd use - it's been for sale for a while. it's great. has balconies for people to sit... it wasn't a club in its first life but it could easily be converted to one.

I'd contribute to my local arts groups and give money for local democrats to win elections. I'd financially support the local women's shelter to employ battered women who learn skills to use in the job market. I'd give money and books to local k-12 schools in poorer areas to have enrichment programs for students that are free and ask local people to volunteer in these programs.

I'd make sure my kids had financial security, mostly by making sure they have good jobs and the skills to survive beyond the present day.

I would give money to the local free food movements that work to create community orchards and gardens to insure food security and would support a local farm to provide fresh, organic produce for food at my club/bookstore. the menu would be limited but good, fresh tasty food.

I would also buy an apt in another country... maybe Montreal. maybe in Paris. I would travel whenever possible and see the great museums and other wonders of the world.

For all the talk of caring for the poor only this and a couple of other posts in the entire thread suggested using their new found wealth to help anyone disadvantaged.
They would all take the money and run.

While I actually find no fault in this (and bet CC people would be far more charitable) it proves a point.
One of the reasons for the DUmpster is to hold primitives to the standards they claim for themselves and once again they have failed miserably.

That says a lot, if this idiot won the lottery he or she would still want to leave the USA in order to get all the freebies from the government.

They are liberals, therefore they don't have to share.

I will tell you what would happen to the majority of dummies. They would buy everything under the sun, blow thru the money like shit thru a goose and in 3 years end up broke and miserable... just like they are now.

I firmly believe that in the majority of cases you are genetically disposed to your wealth station in life. The rich got that way by working hard and making the correct decisions... that is why the are rich. They know the value of a dollar and don't blow it on stupid stuff.

Now I am not talking about the trust fund idiots. Daddy, mommy or granddad made that money and usually by hard work, and most trust fund idiots don't know how to work. That's why they have a trust fund. Will Pittstain comes to mind. If you were to give all the money in the trust to Pittstain, he would drink it all up in 3 years.

Spreading the wealth just a little.

How about spreading the wealth more than just a little? You know like how you expect other people to do.

Strange.
Not a one of them opted to pay more taxes.
Wonder why that is? :-)

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Oh, they would know what to do with it. Then that long lost cousin from their mother's uncle's college roommate's grandkid's best friend would call up asking for money for setting up their solar farm in Idaho. Then they would start throwing their money away.

Whelp, considering Unca Obammy's Hopey-Changey Club gets about 40 percent right off the top, I'd say they got enough.

After that, any charity I donate to will be of my choice, not the United Way, not the Red Cross for starters.

As far as "blow it" money, after paying off mortgage and bills and setting aside 4 years of Ivy-league tuition for two kids, 10 percent of what's left on a long Vegas/Hawaii bender oughta do it.  Invest the rest, and once I have enough interest income to pay taxes, bills, get a new car every 5 years or so and a vacation once a year, THEN I retire.

And while it may seem cruel and heartless to not blow everything on family, etc., I don't see them blowing it on me.

First, I'd have to buy a lottery ticket which ain't gonna happen....but if I did and hit the umpteen hundred million dollar lottery, I would want to keep it secret so my life didn't change. Unlike the DUmmies, I'm happy with my plain, simple life and want to keep it just like it is.

First thing is to get a personal money manager, Work with them to set up a budget.  Buy only the things that we need and not just want.    Wait one month, each time  when considering spending before buying anything over $10,000, cooling off period for impulsive buys.

Sell home and rent a winter rental on a lake, or salt water in a different State every year.  Summers, rent a huge motor home and travel the North West.

The money manager will be the excuse when friends or family expect us to give them money, sorry no hard feelings but our money is being controlled by a 3rd. party.    Trust funds for the family that can collect on their 50 year
birthday and not one day sooner.

Buy a big boat, Hell no, rent one when wanted.   World travel?  Hell no, too much to see and do in America, why spend my money in some other country while I can see fantastic sights in my own country and help the local comunities ?

Charity---just one The Shriner's Hospital for crippled Children in Springfield Ma.     Spent 3 days free room and Board for me and Granddaughter had a birth defect operated on.    God Bless the Bectash , spelling? Shriner's.
The stuff I saw going on with the children there will effect me for the rest of my life.

That would be Jack Whittaker. What is puzzling is he was quite wealthy before he hit the lottery. Was worth around 10-12 million. Owned several construction companies. My dad worked for/with him many years ago. Dad said he was a real nice guy.

Now Jack is divorced, he and his companies are bankrupt, and his 16 yr old grand daughter is dead from OD'ing after buying drugs with all the money he gave her. I seem to recall reading that his daughter died too, but I think it was natural. I think that was a couple 3 years ago.

I picture dummies doing the same thing.
