When my brother was in college in Indiana, he said you could only deer hunt with a shotgun and slugs. 

Land too flat, rifles have too much range.

I would guess that "Nathan" had the shotgun in his lap with his finger off the trigger. Driver swerved and "Nathan" panicked and pulled the trigger. "Nathan" didn't have his seatbelt on because it would impede his hanging out of the window to get a good shot. "Nathan" was then ejected from the truck.
