Occupy Clear Channel - Take Back OUR Airwaves 12/12/11

http://www.mediaactioncenter.net /

OCCUPY CLEAR CHANNEL!

Join us Monday, December 12th for a national action to "Occupy" Clear Channel stations and demand our rights as owners of the radio airwaves.
Clear Channel stations across the country are abandoning progressive talk in favor of even more right-wing stations on our airwaves - in anticipation of an election year. We will let them know that eliminating progressive views and further promoting right wing pro-corporate views to the exclusion of any other thought is not acceptable on our public airwaves.
This will be in conjunction with a physical protest in Sacramento. We will meet at 1440 Ethan Way at Clear Channel's offices in Sacramento Monday morning at 10:30. Then we will go inside to inspect their public files.
And we are asking other people around the country to do inspections of Clear Channel stations on the same day. Can you help in this action to start reclaiming our public airwaves?
It's easy: Just visit your local Clear Channel station on Monday, during normal business hours. Politely tell them you are there to inspect their public files. Because we are the owners of the airwaves, they legally must let you in. If they do not , get their names and write down what they tell you, and let us know. (Details of our rights are at http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/decdoc/public_and_br... . We suggest you print this and carry it with you in case the stations do not well understand our legal right to conduct such inspections. Refer to the section, "The Local Public Inspection File.")
Find out where your local Clear Channel station is here: http://www.clearchannel.com/Radio/StationSearch.aspx ? (You may need to cut and paste into your browser.)
They may ask you for your name and address, and may charge a reasonable amount for photocopying files. They also may observe you as you do your inspection. They may NOT ask you to identify your organization or reason for doing an inspection, and they cannot refuse to provide you with a copy of the file.
Once inside, we suggest you start by looking at the letters file. You will (should) find complaints there; see who is complaining and about what, and how the station is reacting to the community. Also, look through the political files; find out who is buying political ads and for how much money.
You will be amazed at what you find, and you'll find it enormously empowering. Take notes and tell us what you discover.
If you plan to join us, please reply to this email or post on our facebook page before Monday, and we will add your city to our publicity outreach. If we can have people in many cities inspect Clear Channel's files on the same day, we will send a powerful message to Corporate radio station owners that WE own the airwaves, and they must serve our interest - the public interest.

______________________________________

This is reprinted from the website at the first link above.

If you are in a city where you have a Clear Channel station (they lease over 800 of our frequencies so chances are good that they lease a station in your town), please pay the station a visit. After this week's airing of a call to violence against progressives and our elected officials aired on 1510 WLAC AM, it has become apparent that Clear Channel intends to deny access and discriminate on OUR airwaves against Democrats, progressives and liberals.

Please visit a station near you and follow the above procedures. These are YOUR airwaves. Hold Clear Channel accountable for their blatant bias and for their violent rhetoric.

You should also contact Sue Wilson (Now a DUer SueWilson) and let her know which city you're in and which station you're inspecting.

You can contact her at sue@mediaactioncenter.net

Thanks to all who take part in this National Action Day!

And thanks to bfealk and SueWilson for directing us to this great organization: Media Action Center

I keep hearing that the first amendment protects the right of speech, camping in public places, public defecation and urination, and everything else the clOWnS do, I would think that  the first would also protect the speech of rightwingers, but I guess not.

1. E-mailed Occupy Nashville with this info

Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 02:10 AM by Tsiyu
Please crosspost and Facebook and twitter this info to get the word out. This can be done at any time during a station's regular business hours, but Monday is a coordinated nationwide effort

I am hoping to do this in a smaller TN city on my way to Georgia, may even hit up an Atlanta station or two!

This could really be a fun exercise of our rights to OUR airwaves.

I hope many Duers can join this effort.

Media Action Center wants to know what happens when YOU visit your local Clear Channel Station, so be sure to let them know what happens when you visit your local Clear Channel station for an inspection.

Hey DUmmy if those airwaves are our airwaves, we have the right to listen to the shows we choose, last time I checked every radio has a button or 2 that one can push to change the station., until you find something you like.

11. What about on-air occupation of programs on Clear Channel?

I know there are screeners and it's unlikely any of us will get on the air, but I'm talking about inundating the shows so that the dittoheads have to really wait for their turn to spew their hatred for Obama and anything that isn't Tea Party or neoconservative.

Snerdly will just hang up on your sorry asses.  :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

12. It's not just Clear Channel

The major right wing station in DC is owned by Cumulus - the second largest radio group in the country.

Until we get the FCC to bring back strict station ownership restrictions - no more than 2 per market - radio will continue to be dominated by the 3 or 4 largest group owners. These owners have absolutely intention of "serving the public interest" and never will. Their only interest is in making larger and larger profits by airing cheap, syndicated programming.

Hey DUmmy they serve the public interest by choosing formats that people will actually listen to.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Technically "the people" do own the radio air waves. Since more people, based on ratings and advertising prices, listen to conservative talk radio over liberal talk radio, then Clear Channel and others are carrying out the will of the people. The only reason "progressive" talk radio fails is that few people listen to it when given a choice. It seems to be the liberal's true intention is to deny those "who own the air waves" their choice of ideologies they wish to hear about.

Another twist in the noose that strangles freedom of speech, brought to you by your friendly progressives who seem to know what is in everyone's best interest.

Actually Carl, they do have to allow any citizen inspect their "Public File" if requested during normal business hours, if the station holds an FCC broadcast license.  Not that there is much in it, they're required to contain copies of the license, and all FCC filings related to it, logs of all "public service" programming aired, as well as copies of all correspondence from viewers/listeners, and station responses to same........and that's pretty much it.

Plus, every five years, when license renewal comes up, the public is invited to "comment" on whether or not that license should be renewed.  The station is required to air notices of the comment period 90 days prior to its initiation.  This procedure is also required each time a license/station changes ownership.

I stand corrected in that sense but am sure they don`t have to allow for activity that interferes with business operations or poses safety risks.
I suppose if they mean sending a person in to waste their time then that is one thing but if they are suggesting sending in a large crowd to harass employees there probably are statues that will allow them to be removed from the premise.
That was how I interpreted the OP but maybe wrong given the nature of the business.

That's what I was thinking you were responding to, because it sounds as if the idiots want to do a whole lot more than just spend a few minutes perusing some public files.

It'll flop.  Really, who wants to spend time mulling through a bunch of FCC filings?  Clear Channel has a system and they, no doubt, keep their business affairs in order.  It's a dead end for this totalitarian Tsiyu idiot.

True....there are definite guidelines for the public to access a stations Public File.

Here in Kansas City, ours, as well as many of the other stations' public files were bound, and kept in the Kansas City Public Library........our offices had a notice posted on the front door advising the public where it could be viewed.

Reading it was subject to the library's rules, and that way no interruption of business could ever occur.

As an aside, in my over fifteen years in broadcasting, I never had a single request from anyone to read the file.....except for the FCC........99.99999% of the public don't even know that they exist.......

Step One. Send large crowds, too large for everyone to inspect files at the same time. Complain that they are being denied access guaranteed by law, initiate silly lawsuits. harass conservative radio stations incessantly.
Stuff the FCC with commie libs who will deny licenses based on bogus complaints.

all part of a plan to shut down conservative speech by a totalitarian minority.

That's what I thought - that the public files are stored in a non-biased public location, libraries, town halls, etc. So, the intent of this is to simply cause disruption by looking for something that isn't there.

As for tying up phone lines... Those aren't public. Sorry asshats.

Libs tried to do all of this stuff before to ClearChannel, during the Clinton administration.......they failed.....dismally.

If the POTUS was unable to pursue his vendetta against Fox News.......what makes you think a bunch of unwashed, uncoordinated hippies will be more successful against ClearChannel (which, BTW is a huge organization)?

All these OWS cretins really know how to do is squat in parks, carry signs, beat on drums (or plastic buckets) get high, and generally create a huge unsanitary mess for the (liberal) citizens of these (liberal) cities to pay in increased taxes or reduced services, to clean up.  Poetic justice......

Personally, I think that their "fifteen minutes" is pretty much over........

This is why businesses have security or the cops remove anyone interfearing with their right to do business. It makes people like me that do that work busy taking the trash out. They are not going to occupy shit. All one has to do in most cases is ask them to leave once. After that it's game on.

Hey!  Today's the big day!  Anybody heard how the event is going?  We have no ClearChannel station here, so all quiet over here.

They may ask you for your name and address, and may charge a reasonable amount for photocopying files.

They expect a bunch of DUmmies to get up on a Monday morning on their own steam, go do this rather boring piece of work (probably being re-directed to the library anyway), and then pay their OWN MONEY, something like A DOLLAR A COPY to stand there and photocopy boring legal papers and various run of the mill letters?

OK.
