Going on my first hunting trip

I have never handled or shot a gun....Are there any forums, you tube clips, I can go to, learn background and safety... Then I plan on going to a gun store and talking to them too, learning from them, and purchasing a gun for my first trip as well as going to the shooting range. We will be hunting wild boar. This will be a gun for hunting only. We plan on eating almost every part of the boar. This animal will not be wasted. Any other advice would really be appreciated. Thanks

I have been using google as well... DU is a huge resource and I was hoping to tap into its expertise.

7. well there are some hunters here and a fair contingent of gun afficianados

but in general I wouldn't think a progressive board would be the best resource. Having said that and giving you the benefit of the doubt (I confess this seems just a little er...fishy for the reasons I just gave) I have some questions that would help me direct you for the help you are seeking.

You said you are going on a hunting trip, your first. When and where? With a guide, friends, alone? Again WHY are you doing this? I ask for a real reason. People hunt for a variety of reasons and knowing what yours are will help with getting you useful information.

Just how are you planning to handle the carcass? Do it yourself or hired out Have you ever eaten wild pig? (if not you may not want to start with boar)

Lots of questions or things to think about.

Why would you want to go hunting one of North America's most dangerous wild game, with no firearms experience, and in the company of many other equally inexperienced friends? As others have said, responsible hunting involves training and takes time to develop skills. It's not a lark. Start with a drum circle maybe.

Get a Marlin 1895G "Guide Gun". Hard hitting power in a short and handy lever action. Open sights, not a scope. You'll be in brush. It only has a four round magazine, but if you don't drop the boar in four shots, it'll have you.

Well fed wild boar will be plentiful....next year.

I wonder if the DUmmie knows that pigs will eat meat?

Illuminate me, sir.

We don't have wild boars out here in Nebraska, and to the best of my knowledge, I've never seen one in real life--and I've been an observer of wildlife, sometimes reluctantly so, from Montana to New Jersey, from Maine to Kentucky.  Maybe I've seen one, but didn't know what it was.

But anyway, aren't wild boars pretty big, and capable of eviscerating one?

Wouldn't it be better for this primitive to start out going after smaller game, such as grouse maybe, to get the hang of it, before tackling something this size?

Even I wouldn't try to fo hunting one of those and I know people that have and I'm far from a bad shot. If they take anything less then a .357 for a hand gun or a large caliber rifle like a 30.06 then they need to stick to the X-box

Anybody here ever see Razorback? Arguably the greatest movie ever made about a giant killer boar in the Australian Outback starring Gregory Harrison, of Trapper John M.D. fame?

No other giant killer boar movies have all of that.

I would only go with someone who has proof of successful hunts and no scars.  I sure wouldn't take a newbie out who has no gun experience.  I kind of hope the DUmmie gets into hunting.  Harvesting your own food can be hard work and I find it a bit humbling.

I'm far, far more afraid of a halfwit like DDnumbers carrying a loaded gun than I am of any wild animal.

Anyone who would go into the field with him is as much a DUmbass as he is.

This can't end well for the primitive.

Society, on the other hand might see a small improvement.

I likes me some pig hunting - I was 15 the first time I went out and used a 22-250 bolt gun.

The most recent time I went out, it was the 35-06 and the 45/70.

...and yes ... Pigs are omnivores and will eat meat. Fresh and rotten if need be.

I think the mole primitive (BlueDigger?  Hmmm . . . ) was right in its' recommendations for "enough gun."  If it were I, I'd start with a .30-06 and work up from there.  Or, I'd find a .45-70 . . . an old Guide Gun.

Oh come on, hunting TOFU is the PETA's favorite activity.  Surely they have many ways to roast it.

In all seriousness, though, PETA kills more pets than any other animal organization there is.  They're very good at killing tame critters...

What we've have right around here are your ordinary household hogs that have escaped and are running wild. They to can be pretty dangerous but down in the swamps in the lower part of the state you have wild boar...and they are BAD.

Someone thought it would be good idea to put Russian boar in a fenced in area and charge to hunt them...must have been an educated DUmmie with no knowledge of hogs at all. Now they are running wild everywhere down state. Some hog hunters tell me that the Russian boar are so mean because they don't understand plain English... :-)

There's a picture on the net somewhere of a hog a kid supposedly killed with a .357 pistol I think it was weighing 1,200 pounds killed in S.C. a few years ago.

Snopes and complete hogzilla trivia.

56. I've got a 98 Mauser bored out to .30-06.

Obviously a Nazi rifle since it has small eagle & swastika symbols stamped in several places. A fine rifle I inherited from my grandfather, but I prefer my BAR II - also chambered for .30-06.

Here's a DUmbass trying to sound knowledgeable to a buncha DUmbasses. No one calls him on it.

Note to Lasher:  You're a liar. It's impossible to bore out the Mauser to .30 caliber anything. The 98 Mauser is 8mm and the .30-06 is a 7.62mm. The Mauser already has a larger bore. You would need a new barrel with a smaller bore.

This is why I don't fear DUmmies and guns. They have no ****ing clue.

That's exactly how my father wound up with a Mauser 98 in .30-06 (with a Mannlicher stock)--the 8mm bore was shot out.  Then, many years later, the stock cracked.  He's got a new black polycarbonate stock for it, but the rear peep sight is a problem on it--it interferes with the stock.  He'll get it figured out someday.

Primitives should start out hunting snipe.   Late at night in the woods, a paper bag strategically placed open on the ground, and the bird just runs right in.
