Sad news here

The economy has taken down another family business. My family member's coffeehouse, in business for a decade and thriving most of that time, has taken a turn for the worse in the last several months. Business has fallen like a rock. Despite a loyal customer base who love the place, it's the end.

Today seven employees were let go and the store was closed. Tomorrow there will be free coffee for regular customers to say goodbye.

Remember when you read financial advice telling you to give up your coffee drinks that there are flesh and blood families who fall, too.

The owner of the store worked his heart out, baking his scones and cookies at 4 a.m. every day without a stinking day off for the last 18 months. Now he has no income and is tens of thousands of dollars in debt. And two small children to care for.

It's been a tearful day. No more pie baking.

Hmmm.  franksolich has a question, in regards bold phrases above.

Who was president most of the time the past decade?

Who's been president the last several months?

I want to know why the money-gubbing bastard was allowed to seek his financial benefit while his employees were all allowed to be dumped unceremoniously into the bread line.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

2. Sorry to hear that

A local restaurant closed up here, too. Abruptly. They had expanded recently and I'm guessing business didn't make up for the cost.

I always tried to patronize the place when I could. They had good food. :(

You know -- I'm starting to think the hopenotized masses set themselves up, many believing deep in their hearts that nothing but sweetness & light, free ponies, and a robust economy were just around the corner because The One told them so.. Some, - because of those beliefs - made very foolish investments.

Gee, maybe because the Dem mandated increase in the minimum wage and the upcoming bump made it so he couldn't afford his employees?

Maybe because Obumble, in trying to scare the nation into accepting his socialist programs by saying the economy was in a "CRISIS" 27 times in each speech, actually scared the country into not buying $5 a cup coffee?
Help keep America beautiful...deface a liberal.

The Democrat and Republican parties are simply the left and right wings of the same bird of prey.

The road to freedom is paved with dead liberals.

Yep, wallets are tighter than snare drums. Thanks to 0 and the media, the recession is much more worse than needed to be.

I know of at least two small coffee shop/diners and two small bars that closed early last year.  But that was because of the smoking ban that Illinois put in place, not the economy.

You think they would have bought a clue when Starbucks started closing down to conserve resources/save money.  I agree with you on the smoking ban.  We had one instituted here last year, and businesses that were aware of it prepared accordingly.

Some places tried to build outdoor "sheds" for the smokers, but they were told that the buildings could not have doors or windows installed, so they offered little more than rain shelters.

Off topic, but some Mexicans have taken some unused gas stations and turned them into restaurants.  Tacos Y Lopez is an old Citgo station with the small shop that has been turned into a kitchen.  The pumps were pulled out and picnic tables installed under the store's canopy.  The entire building was repainted yellow with (poorly) hand-written signs advertising the menu.

I keep meaning to take pictures of it.  It's so badly done (ghetto), its too funny not to stop and stare.

3. That just sucks -
.....
I am so sorry. For all of you. I hope something happens, something good, for everyone. And soon..........

Why would she think anything good will happen to DUmmies? It never has.

The DUmmie gospel says they (1) were impoverished by Reaganomics, then (2) got caught in the Bush 41 depression, then (3) got ravaged by welfare reform while Clinton was in office, then (4) lost all their civil liberties when W ripped up the Constitution, and finally (5) the jug-eared Kenyan communist has reneged on their ponies. So the last thirty years have been unending disaster in DUmmyland, with no rays of sunshine on the way.

Hard to understand how that DUmmy coffee shop ever got started in the first place.

Before I left IL it was nice to stop in a bar, have a soda, and not smell like smoke on the way out.

But, these bars were "downtown" and the sidewalks were full of people that have been drinking that had to step outside to smoke, there were "butts" everywhere!

Alot of folks would travel across the Mississippi River into Iowa to patronize the Casinos & taverns there, as they could smoke.

Damn I'm getting old. I remember when coffee was just coffe and a dime a cup.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Just wait until cap 'n trade/ socialized health care, and card check come along. That should really turn the economy around, and by "turn the economy around", I mean it will put it into a death spiral with no hope of recovery for the next century. These DUmmies think they're suffering now...ho ho...they have no clue about what's heading our way.

Still don't understand why ballooning the deficit by five times, giving the American public the biggest tax hike in history, and voiding a 250 year old tradition of contract law wouldn't have delivered a beautiful new pony to every citizen.

It just doesn't make sense. :thatsright:
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

This coffee house was obviously not paying enough in taxes and should have had tougher regulations too, should have been forced to wait until 4:30 to bake those scones and should have limited the amount of cookies that can be baked at one time.

This business obviously shut down out of corporate greed!!

Corporate greed laid off those 7 poor people!!

Resurrected, because for some reason lurking primitives are enjoying this thread.

While the DUmmies enjoy the crazy, muttering grasswire's ancient thread, here's another.
In recognition of the pedophilia epidemic at that obscure school in PA, let's take note of the
pedophilia dilemma of a once-prominent DUmbass, a few years back.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x4584820

Can't help but wonder if this is where co-author and co-pedo Scott Ritter got the idea.
