ACLU is circulating a petition

President Obama and Attorney General Holder:
Protect Women Held in U.S. Custody from Rampant Sexual Abuse

The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have consistently downplayed the problem of sexual assault of immigration detainees. And now, the Department of Justice has proposed regulations that would exclude immigration detainees from protection under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003.

This is an unthinkable attempt to deprive a specific and vulnerable group of people from protection against rape and sexual assault. And it comes despite Congress's clear intent to protect all people in government custody from such abuse.

Take action now. Urge President Obama and Attorney General Holder to make sure all immigration detainees have the full protection of the Prison Rape Elimination Act.

I don't even recognize this country most of the time.

Maybe I'm just in a mood today.  Seems to me the best way to avoid getting raped in prison is to, oh I dunno, NOT END UP IN PRISON.   :thatsright:

Yes, but if we don't allow 20 million undocumented workers into the US we won't have enough people to protest Wall Street's lack of jobs for US workers!

How is that possible? I thought all the immigrants were just poor, honest folk looking to feed their families. To think there is a criminal element among them is just silly Rethuglican talking points.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it's Bush's fault.

Our DOJ wants to try overseas, noncitizen international terrorists in our civilian criminal courts, but illegal aliens in US custody within CONUS aren't entitled to the same legal protection as other prisoners?

Don't worry.  Obama is going to be releasing most of the illegals being held anyway.  Then they can get a lawyer and sue the government and be set for life.

There's a lot of money to being a victim of violence in a prison. If an inmate is killed in prison, for instance, the family usually gets a settlement around 1.5 million (in California). Rape cases usually are settled in the hundreds of thousands. So prisons DO have an obligation to keep prisoners safe.

On a serious note. I have never understood how not serving a certain food, no TV, no weight lifting,... is a violation of the Eighth Amendment but being brutally sodomized or forced to down by the big bulldyke in prison is not?

Can anyone explain how the ACLU is not fighting for single cells or something?

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
