Andy Rooney Ending Regular '60 Minutes' Segment
1:47 PM PDT 9/27/2011 by Marisa Guthrie

The 92-year-old newsman will announce his retirement in a show-wrapping segment on this Sunday's broadcast.

NEW YORK -- After more than 1000 broadcasts, Andy Rooney will make his last regular appearance on this Sunday's 60 Minutes.

Rooney has been a fixture on the newsmagazine since 1978. And he'll make the announcement himself in a quintessential show-wrapping segment. It will be preceded by a career retrospective interview with correspondent Morley Safer.

"There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be," said Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman and 60 executive producer. "He’ll hate hearing this, but he’s an American original. His contributions to 60 Minutes are immeasurable; he’s also a great friend."

Rooney is not likely to be replaced. And Fager said that he is always welcome on the broadcast.

"It’s harder for him to do it every week," said Fager. "But he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him.”

Rooney still comes to work everyday, although he's slowed down in recent years. He was not on last week's 44th season premiere of 60 Minutes. But last season, he appeared on 18 of the newsmagazine's 36 installments.

...went off into the cornfield.... :lmao:  Yes, he should have retired long ago.  Some of his opinions have turned positively batty.  When you're in the public eye, it's best to go with dignity at the proper time.  You don't want to be remembered as demented codger.   He was uncomfortable to watch even many years ago, with the shaking and all.  Why not just write, and have a trusted editor go through it with a fine tooth comb to weed out the craziness?

I would've thought that Looney Rooney was with the show since its inception in 1968, but the Wiki article says he joined the all-lib cast in 1979.

Apparently Looney Rooney's commentaries ran a less-intensive alternative to the "Point/Counterpoint" segment until the P/C thing was dropped completely and he was brought on full-time.

I was always amazed at the length and breadth to which Andy's eyebrows achieved. Really stunningly disgusting, and that was part of Andy's schtick. He didn't give a ****, as long as he could see through them.  :rotf:

I don't think I have watched 60 Minutes in 20 years. I wonder how many minutes of my life I saved by doing that?

Lets see....60 minutes a week, 52 weeks a year, 20 years.....62400 minutes. That is 1040 hours...43 days. I am sure I spent that time constructively. ::)
