AAA ditching independent tow truck operators triggering layoffs at small tow companies

AAA Northern California streamlining road service

Don't get too attached to your friendly tow truck operator when your car won't start and needs to be hauled off to the garage. He or she may not be around much longer.

AAA Northern California is ditching decades-old contracts with many small, independent operators, reducing their presence in Northern California by more than 10 percent, from 300 to 265 by the end of the year, and requiring operators to cover greater distances than before.

The changes - what AAA calls "dense metro network optimization" - are designed to lower costs and streamline roadside services.

"It's part of an ongoing effort to provide more efficient business practices," said Cynthia Harris, a AAA spokeswoman. "We will be reducing the number of contract stations and awarding a larger volume of calls to a fewer number of stations."

-----------------------------------

"We got the official word on Monday," said Shawn Nall, proprietor of Lamorinda Tow in Lafayette, which had a contract with AAA for 23 years. "We've already laid off nine people, half our staff, since then. We're completely uncertain about our future."

1. "streamline roadside services"

Translation: Longer waits before a tow truck gets there, meaning crappier service at the same policy rate.

4. I'm unimpressed with AAA

so much so that I went ahead and canceled my membership. Every time I called them for help they found a reason not to.

They can take a long walk on a short pier for all I care.

They charge like $60 a year, and the DUmmies want them to provide champagne and caviar with every tow.

Do people need tow trucks more than once a year?

I've never had to use a tow truck.  Ever.

If you drive a Prius like they do I would think they need one often, or a broken down old Buick that doubles as a house.  :-)

When I whip out my AAA card drivers genuflect.  Member for 38 years.  It has more than paid for itself over the years in peace of mind alone.

{One of my moles seems to have accidentally gotten someone banned.  :mental: } Oopsie, but not this thread.

ETA:

Once they asked me if I could have a vehicle which had had a 'history' checked at a local garage.  It was not the vehicle that was the problem  which ceased once I got a divorce.

I've been very lucky. Every time but once, when I've had a dead battery it's been in my garage.
The one other time, it was in the parking lot of a WalMart.

I used to drive a p o s, and, I locked my keys in a few times...
In my early 20's when I would drink too much at a bar far from home, I would pull off the coil wire and call for a tow, way cheaper than a DUI.
Everyone who drives should have some kind of roadside assistance. You aren't always near friends and/or family.

Whoops.

I got Allstate Motor Club along with my regular insurance.  Best $10 I ever spent.  Of course I got it after the Datsun and the BMW both broke down.

I have the identical service as AAA at no cost to me from my friendly neighborhood Toyota dealer where I purchased my American made and non union made Tacoma pick up.  :-)

We had AAA, but then it got really expensive and we ditched it.  I work with a rental car company, so if for whatever reason my car doesn't start after work, I can just take a different car home.  The AAA service would never work out for us in the long run.  If we needed a tow truck, we would just bit the bullet and take care of it ourselves.  It's not like we need a tow every few weeks/months.

My car only drives to and from work and some small errands.  Same with my husband's car.  If something happened on my way to/from work, then  yes, that would suck, but AAA is still a waste for us.  I know it comes in handy for others who use the service (and discounts associated with it) a lot more than we would.

Althought I've never had to use the AAA service (beyond the hotel discounts), like zeitgeist,  it has offered peace of mind on more than one long car trip.  When you are 2,000 miles from home in a 20+ year old car, you begin to appreciate what they can offer.   :-)

That being, said, I haven't renewed since 2009, and don't intend on taking any enormous trips until 2013, so there is no sense in renewing until then.

I haven't needed the services of AAA, even though I drive old(er) cars and trucks.  I like the older ones, because all you need to fix them is a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, baling wire and duct tape.

If any of the above can't get you going again, then the car is truly BROKEN!   :-)

The only thing I use that's AAA are the batteries for my TV remote.
