Ron Paul, Ames Contender The campaign has laid the groundwork for an impressive showing. Is Ron Paul the candidate to beat at Ames this year? The Texas congressman may be sixth in the national polls, according to the RealClearPolitics average, but when it comes to winning straw polls, no one is better. Smart organizing and an especially dedicated base propelled Paul to victory at the CPAC straw poll in both 2010 and 2011. More recently, Paul won the straw poll at the Republican Leadership Conference this June, beating a crop of popular GOP candidates, including Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain. While attention is focused on the Bachmann–Pawlenty rivalry (and how many write-in votes possible candidate Rick Perry can score), Paul may just swoop in and be in the top three — or win outright.
IIRC, he did well in 2008 also. The Ames straw poll is really a joke. The campaigns buy tickets to the "event", and that's essentially how you get your votes.
We're gonna have to put up with this shit for another 6-8 months?
Didn't the gnome say he wasn't going to run for re-election?Or was that McCain?
How is it the Republican's crazy uncle version of the evil elf always wins these polls when he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning?Cindie
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said today in Iowa City that he would be “rather saddened†if he doesn’t finish in the top three in the Iowa GOP straw poll in Ames.Paul, a Texas congressman, drew over 100 people to his stop at the Sheraton hotel in Iowa City. He also has an event over the noon hour in Davenport today.Paul said his fifth-place finish in 2008 “wasn’t anything to brag about.†If he ends up in fourth or fifth place this year, “I’m not going to be all that excited. I’m going to be rather saddened,†he said, to laughter from the audience. “I hope you won’t let me go to Ames to be saddened.â€Paul heavily emphasized straw poll attendance during his speech. At one point, he characterized it as “a vote for sanity in government.†Although the straw poll has no legal significance, he said, it “sends a powerful message.â€â€œIt’s a good bellwether for what people are thinking and how well they are motivated,†he said. “It represents the people who are motivated, more than what you’d find in a general election, so to me that’s very important.â€
Because of his grass-roots popularity.
