To avoid new members spamming the site with links to their blogs and agendas, perhaps Admin should consider a post count requirement prior to being permitted the ability to post a link?

Maybe 5 posts or more?

Just a thought as we head into election season.

I think that's a good idea myself.

Some minimum post-count required before one can post a link.

Some minimum post-count required before one can start a topic.

Depending on what granularity we can achieve with the forum software.

Obviously we need to allow people to start topics in some sub-forums like "welcomes and introductions" with a 0 post count.

They should also be required to introduce themselves before they can do anything.

That would be ideal, but I'm not sure how it could be done.

Me neither...but it's an excellent idea.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

"My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far I've finished two bags of M&M's and a chocolate cake. I feel better already." – Dave Barry

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.

Just don't give them full posting privileges until they introduce themselves first. If they fail to do so and continue to post, then 3 warnings would suffice before they're terminated.

We'll look at what the software allows us to do and let you guys know.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I remember on one forum that was hosted by proboards.com they had set up a visitors forum that people could post in without having an account.  It was spammed a lot.

We would have to set up a new member group with a one-post limit restricting them to the Welcomes and Introductions forum (or at least the Blog section to keep them isolated)... easy enough.

I've considered doing the same for the Fight Club for certain people. :-)

If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

Waste of bandwidth.  If I want to read stupid comments, I'll go to YouTube.

True, but proboards were free and ad supported. They can also be set to private much like this one where membership is by invitation only.  It was on them where I learned a limited amount of coding.  Limited enough to know that I can't do it. lol

There is an option to make the Shoutbox public.  I wonder if we could install a second one just for guests.

IF we ever get advanced enough to upgrade to SMF 2.X, there ARE features that direct folks to the intro board. I'll look into the post count & link thingy.

Is there a welcome message when someone joins? It has been so long since I joined I do not remember.

If there is one, there could be a kindly worded message with a link to the Welcome forum. Like:

Welcome to the Conservative Cave. To get you off to a good start, may we recommend you introduce yourself here in the Welcome and Introduction form. Here's the link:
