I haven't watched AI since season II. When it gets down to the finalist it's more about popularity than talent.

I wonder if there is anyone that got rejected by AI that's went on to become famous or at least well known ?

I haven't ever watched it  :loser:

Jennifer Hudson, eliminated (6th runner up).  Went on to win the Oscar for Dreamgirls.  Was much, much better than the winner that year.

Not sure if anyone watched last night, but Jason Castro butchered one of the best songs of all time, Memory (from the musical Cats). Unbelievably, the judges liked it, but it was just so....so.....Jason Castro-ish. I really, really wish he would get booted off, and SOON. His talent (if you can call it that) is just so below everyone else.

I had to watch the Cats performance (by the great Elaine Page) over and over to wash away the bad sounds in my head after Jason sang it.

There IS no comparison to this:

I cry every darn time.  :bawl:

Oh poo-shaw!  He didn't butcher the song.  He performed a lousy arrangement of the song that did not work.  "Memories" is one of the most irritating songs of all times.  I rank it up there with "Feelings" as being one of the most contrived and overblown "emotion driven" numbers ever recorded (Weber has to go some to beat himself in that category).

Making those contestants sing those pretentious and overproduced Broadway songs was cruel and unusual punishment.  None of them shined.  None of their hearts were in the songs, and that makes a big difference in a performances.

Jason Castro stinks no matter what type of genre they have to sing. He could sing the Cracker Jack song and it would sound just like every other song he's ever sang. OTOH, Sayesha rocked with her song, as did Carly and David Cook, despite the fact they were "pretentious and overproduced" broadway songs.  ::)

And I'm a chick, therefore I'm entitled to like (on occassion) contrived and overblown emotionally driven numbers.

I missed Sayesha's performance last night, so I just now watched it since I had the show saved for my wife.  She was very good and downright sexy.  Broadway may be her niche.  She was clearly the best in last night's showcase.

I'll admit that the Castro boy does seem to be stuck in the "Love's Like A Butterfly" genre, but that doesn't mean he can't sing and it doesn't mean he can't have a career.  He needs to do the Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" or Janis Joplin's "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)" and show the people he isn't just Greg Brady in dreadlocks.

Do you flip when a fella sends you flowers?

Is that a trick question? Yeah, sure, every once in awhile when it's out of the blue, otherwise its just a waste of money.

But honestly, the hubby gets way more action appreciation when he helps out with the housework.

Seriously, though, I agree with what you say about Castro....but, regardless of the type of song he sings, I don't think he can belt them out like all of the others.

I ENJOY BEING A GIRL

I'm a girl, and by me that's only great!
I am proud that my silhouette is curvy,
That I walk with a sweet and girlish gait
With my hips kind of swivelly and swervy.

I adore being dressed in something frilly
When my date comes to get me at my place.
Out I go with my Joe or John or Billy,
Like a filly who is ready for the race!

When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,
I enjoy being a girl!

When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth, but pearl,
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl!

I flip when a fella sends me flowers,
I drool over dresses made of lace,
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

When men say I'm sweet as candy
As around in a dance we whirl,
It goes to my head like brandy,
I enjoy being a girl!

When someone with eyes that smoulder
Says he loves ev'ry silken curl
That falls on my iv'ry shoulder,
I enjoy being a girl!

When I hear the compliment'ry whistle
That greets my bikini by the sea,
I turn and I glower and I bristle,
But I happy to know the whistle's meant for me!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

OMG Simon is such a tool!  :evillaugh:

Ok, that performance totally kicked Michael Jackson's pasty white butt. Thank you for that Dixie!

Is it pasty white do you think? Nevermind...I don't wish to contemplate such things.  :thatsright:

That was a great song, wasn't it?

Yes, David Cook kicks some major buttage.
Ah-HA...paging Dr. Freud....paging Dr. Freud.   :-)

If Kristy Lee Cook had been able to get past her stage fright she'd have kicked a$$.

IMO, she should be a model.  She's almost as good looking as my wife.   :cheersmate:

Not on topic at all, but whatever. Make fun because I like an emotional song every now and then, and disliked Castro's version of one of my favorites.

And a girly-girl I am not. Can't wait until Red October sees that...he'll get a good kick out of it. That's just funny right there. :lmao:  :lmao:

Does a thread about American Idol really have to stay on topic?  There just isn't enough topic to hold a thread.

Undies, I don't mean to be an asshole, but I do have to question the taste of anyone who thinks Castro could be a great singer.  That guy's ten times more irritating than any Broadway singer.   Just sayin'.

I never knew the words to the song Memory, but I learned to play it on the piano a LOOOONG time ago.  I always thought is was a real pretty melody.  If anyone should sing it, it should have been Brooke White doing a "stripped down" version.  It would have suited her.  The only thing that suits Castro would be a boot in the ass.  I can't believe Carly got the boot instead.  What an abortion!  :banghead:

Of course you don't!  Some things just are.   :innocent:

Well then, I guess I am safe since I never said he was a "great singer".  I said he can sing, which he can, and he can have a career.  Remember, I was a professional singer.  I know the business.

I agree.  The melody is pure musical magic.  That is why Weber is a great Broadway songwriter.  The song is still overblown and overproduced.  That means it is great for the Broadway stage.  Outside of that context, it is "Feelings" with more high notes and vocal acrobatics than Mariah Carey's orgasm.

I disagree.  Brooke picked the wrong song last night.  She should have done "I Don't Know How To Love Him".

You seem to be as passionate about Castro as my wife is about Brooke.  Me thinks you both protesth too much.

That, as an TV audience member, disappointed me.  Carly looks so much like a young Grace Slick she made me remember my enthusiasm for singing.  The Girl was born for Rock.
