The roads seem more dangerous now then they were 15 or 20 years ago, I'm not sure that they were but it sure feels like it. The attitudes of people now, the shear amount of things to distract people, people who think the speed limit is 30kph over the posted speed.
I think another part of the problem is that simply doing the speed limit puts a person in danger. If you go the speed limit someone is guaranteed, every time to get so close that if you had to stop suddenly, they couldn't react and would hit you.
I don't care if I hurt myself while driving if it's my fault, hell I have before however, if I seriously injured or killed someone I don't know if I could live with myself.
This is truly sad that those people died because of one idiot, who like always came out alive.
Speed limits are lower now than when I was younger.
I think the differences are muliple....so many more cars on the road as most families have at least 2 cars, some have 3, 4 or more, especially if they have teenagers or college students living at home.
Cell phones have always been distracting, but text messaging is just deadly. There are people who read the newspaper while driving!! Now with the new Kindle things, people read them while driving.
Women putting makeup on while the car is moving!!! I will admit I have put mascara on while sitting at a stoplight, but my BFF will put her entire makeup on while driving!!! She doesn't do it anymore if I'm in the car with her....she got tired of me bitching her out when she did it.
Scared the crap out of me. Should have heard me the night we were in SC, in a heavy thunderstorm, heading into the mountains...and I looked over and RB was FLOSSING HER TEETH!!! My reaction wasn't pretty.
There are a lot more elderly drivers. People are still driving into their 90's. Supposedly, they have the lowest accident occurance of any group. That may be true...but many of them are a hazard on the road for everyone else.
Lots of women never learned to drive, neither of my grandmothers did, and both of them lived until the mid -1970's. These days, it's rare for someone not to know how to drive, and are learning at 15 or 16. There are a lot of Mommies out there, that are driving, and really need to take a couple of refresher courses...especially some that are driving "mommy vans" or those great big Suburbans, Tahoes, etc. They always seem to have a car full of kids, they are on the phone, and eating.
Eating is another issue. With all the fast food restaurant drive thru's, people grab their food and eat while driving. When RB and I went out to Murfreesboro, we were on the interstate and had to swerve as this car just drifted into our lane. I looked over, as we got around her, the woman was very intent on opening her hamburger, wasn't even looking up to see where she was going!! It's not just women, men are just as bad.
Teenagers are distracted by everything going on in the car. Other kids, cell phones, food.
Add alcohol into any situation that involves a moving vehicle and it's a potential accident.
