Jane Hamsher started firedoglake, a proto-DU blog.  Apparently Jane supported Caroline Kennedy over Hillary Clinton for New York's junior senator after whatshisface Moynihan kicked the bucket in 2003.  I guess some DUmmies don't like her.

There may be some other history I don't remember, but I think that's the gist of it.
