Hi, DU. Let's hear some pros and cons of limiting CEO pay.

I can think of a million reasons why CEO pay should be limited, but I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons why it should not be, aside from the obvious "If you don't pay a CEO enough, they'll leave the firm!"

So anyway, let's hear some points for and against limiting CEO compensation...

1. How exactly to you limit their pay? Constitutionally. Just asking.

Darn that Constitution ruins all their fun.

Why stop at capping a CEO's salary? Let's cap yours. How much do YOU make. If I think you make too much, I/WE should be able to cap it. Government mandates such as this are just plain stupid. If you don't feel comfortable listing your salary here, though I don't know why you would, PM me. I'll check the cost of living in your area and will "help" you determine what you should be paid. This is, of course, what MY perception is of your needs. I might think that an extra bathroom in your house or an extra car in your garage (do you really need that garage? hmm) are worth paying you for.......

Ouch

Has any of their little boycotts worked yet?

20. A steeply progressive income tax rate will do it.

Something like 90% when they hit the top 0.1% of income.

90% of their 10 million dollar corporate theft, um, "bonus" would go straight to the public welfare.

If the uber-wealthy leave the country, ****'m and good riddance. Take away their citizenship and lock them out.

Then who is going to pay all those 90% tax rates that you dream of?

26. High income tax rates on high incomes.

Edited on Tue Jul-05-11 09:21 PM by JHB
If executives can only stuff so much in their pockets before it gets taxed to kingdom come, they will make different decisions about how to allocate those resources.

The real effect of highly progressive tax rates is not to "soak the rich", it's to change the decisions they make with their money and and put a break on how fast they can get rich-er. Make it less worth their while to squeeze for every last cent they can get.

Rather than micromanaging everything, you just impose a broad condition on the playing field and let the market take its course (don't you love the irony?).

Best of all, it's already been tried and tested, and it worked. Here in the USA, in the 40s 50's and 60s. It's one of the things that helped build up the middle class back then.

 :mental:

The DUmmies economic plan:
1 Tax the piss out of the rich.
2 ??????
3 teh Winnah!!!!!!1111111

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

9. If you're going to do that, you'd have to do "median employee compensation," not average.  Averages can be skewed. Medians can't. (I've given it a lot of thought, but personally believe sky high taxes on ridiculously wealthy would be better).

Sounds like DUmmie Dark has thought this through and has all the angles covered--probably an economics professor at Columbia.

I don't think they realize that in the '40s, '50s, and '60s, losers like them were still losers.
And they didn't live nearly as well as losers do today.

How about "When you don't reward excellence, you don't get excellence."  What's the incentive for a CEO to push an organization on to newer and bigger things if they are just working to a limit?

What about the workers of those companies who will be laid-off when productivity slows?

And would you boycott something like--say--an HIV vaccine manufacturer or a pot dispensary?

CEOs live their job.  They work 60-80 hours a week.  They are never home.   That work schedule/load didn't start when they became a CEO, they busted their asses for years (if not decades) to obtain the title.

This misfits should be thankful for the CEOs of their company -- the reason they have a job and paycheck is because of their leadership and brutally hard work.

I wonder if you've thought of the unintended consequences of this action, like you'll really be able to do it.

CEO's will have their salaries reduced and be "paid" in stock options.  There's plenty of ways around your little plan, DUmmies. :bird:

Hunter with the rainbow flag avatar didn't really think that through, did he?   They never stop to consider how easy it is to just pick up and move, when you have those kinds of resources.  They can fly to the sunny Cayman Islands within the hour if they wanted to.

It's a ridiculous thread with the commie White Wolf joining in, of course.  One nameless DUmmie said she was in favor of outlawing CEOs and CFOs.

That's what White Wolf keeps saying.  All these companies should be turned over to the "workers" to run.  So, if a guy hired for his strong back and weak mind can't make head nor tail out of a balance sheet, well, then that's.....something.  I guess.  Not sure how that's supposed to work.  What would really happen is everyone would clock out and hit the bars.  Company's dead in a week.

Is every single DUer a community organizer, teacher, union member, or what?  Don't any of them work, for say FedEx, International Paper, MedTronics, or any other corporation that is renowned for superior wages and benefits?  My old boss started with nothing and built a billion dollar international company.  The CEO is wildly rich.  So?  He paid me handsomely for good, hard, dedicated work.  I never once begrudged his wealth.
