working the 4th of July
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:29:22 PM »
I'll be working the 4th of July, or more strictly speaking, 11 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. Sunday and Monday.

It isn't my thing to do, retail, but I do the books for this large truck stop here on the eastern fringe of the Sandhills of Nebraska, and occasionally because a clerk wanted time off for family and stuff and there was no one else to fill in the gap, I filled it in.  This usually happens Christmas Eve-Christmas and the 4th of July.

By the way, I do get paid for this, more than anybody else (and that's not counting the double time one gets for working a holiday).

And no, I don't wear one of those stupid uniforms.  I dress in my normal clothes.

However, I've always wondered the practicality of it; it being a holiday, there isn't much traffic and so cash-register receipts are pretty minimal; but I guess the philosophy is that the owners would rather have the reputation of being open 24/7/365 for the long term, at the short-term expense of losing some bucks.

It's a big place, covering several acres.  There's ten gasoline pumps and ten diesel pumps.  There's free parking for circa 75 big trucks and their trailers.  The main building, the retail area, is 200' x 80'.  It's the only place for miles and miles around, out in the Sandhills (but on two major U.S. highways).

And there I am, working all alone.  And it's dark outside.

It of course has the usual and standard security systems, but that does me no good at all.  There's been times when a loud clanging buzzing alarm's gone off, sometimes for half an hour or more, and I only knew of it because a customer told me of it.

About the biggest problem I've ever encountered is when truck drivers bring in credit cards where the charge has to be telephonically-authorized, and ooops, I can't do that.  I've then had to summon a county deputy sheriff to drop by and do the telephone business for me.  Sometimes it means the driver has to wait 15-20 minutes, but truck drivers get free coffee and soda, so they've always taken it in good humor.

I volunteered to work the 4th for my department.  But, on Thursday some of the others figured out a way that I wouldn't have to.  I sputtered about them having to come in and they said, "But you covered last Sunday, and Saturday, the Sunday and Saturday before..."  I was touched.  I didn't think anyone noticed.  So I am enjoying a three day weekend.

That's awful, seahorse, not that you're going to have tomorrow off, but that it's going to be the first time in 7 years. :p

Glad you had a wonderful day, seahorse.  I hope everyone else did, as well.  We just grilled some steaks and made baked potatoes and a salad.
Oh, and the puppies got a bath in the sink.  So, they didn't have such a good day. :-)  Since they insist on sleeping in bed between me and hubby, we insist they don't stink. :p

Thankyou Boudicca!! What kind of puppies do you have??? pics???

The one downfall is that the next few weeks have been cut down to 36 hours... :bawl:, there is not much I can do..but hold on tight and appreciate that i have a job, when so many unfortunates are not doing as well...

The only option i have is to make some stuff, and sell them...

Seahorse, what stuff would you make?
Even though Thor thinks I'm prevaricating :-) I truly do not know how to post pics online, and when I asked hubby he said he couldn't figure out how to do it to the CC website.   :???:

However, I can describe the pups.  They're two from a litter of 8 :o  Mother is a dashhound mix, and the fathers are unknown.  I do think they had at least two puppy daddies for that litter, since Bastien is fawn colored with a white star, stockings and belly, and has what I'd say is a Chihuahua apple head, a bulldog front legs stance and is two pounds heavier than his sister Bayleigh.  Bay has a narrow black and white face, split down the middle horizontally, with droopy spaniel like ears.  Otherwise she's white bodied with black splotches.  Both have longer bodies than they are tall, but rather than the dashhound's short legs, theirs are regular length.  However, on both pups, the front legs are thicker than the rear, which is a dashhound trait.

They're truly Heinz 57's.  At 3 months, Bastien is 6 pounds and Bayleigh is 4.  Hopefully they won't get much larger than our Shih Tsu MacBeth, who is 12.5 pounds.  He's a black and white purebred, adopted from a local pound.

Seahorse, you are right, it's a blessing to have a job in this economy.  I do hope you can get more hours again soon though. :grouphug:
