Southeast students served raw onions as snack

By: Lisa Gartner 05/26/11 11:00 PM
Examiner Staff Writer @Lisa_Examiner

No matter how you slice it, the days of milk and cookies are long gone as schools aim to provide students with healthy fruits and vegetables as snacks.

But raw onions?

That's what several classes of students at Southeast's Turner Elementary were fed Tuesday, instead of the zucchini slices the school's food provider, Chartwells, said it would serve as part of a federal initiative to provide healthy food to young learners.

When Trevor Rill picked up the snack bags from the cafeteria for his third-grade class, he found bundles of raw scallions -- those long, green stalks of onion usually reserved for cooking.

"I asked the cafeteria workers, 'Are you serious?' and they said, 'This is what they sent us,'" said Rill, one of nine City Year corps members assigned to Turner. "So I held them out and said, 'This is what we have,' and the kids went nuts. Two of them ate it in front of me and said, 'This is disgusting.'"

I like green onions, at least the bottom part with a little salt. The green part isn't bad to put on burgers.

Few 3rd graders like them so much they'd want them as a school-provided snack.

SALT?!?  Comrade thundley4, the Obama Food Enforcement Ministry has determined salt to be a Schedule V prohibited food item due to its sodium and chloride content.  It's Dietary Re-education Camp for you the next time you tread on the Children of the People this way!

A handful of raw vegetables is not a "snack."  There is about 5 calories in such a handful, you might as well go without.  Slices of raw zuchini?  1) this is a waste of money, as the kids will end up playing games with them, and 2)  sooo out of the scope of the Federal govt.  Stupid.  My mom tried every trick in the book to get me to eat peas, lima beans, and other monstrosities, and I thwarted her attempts every time.  Why does the federal government think they're going to be any more successful?

Because the Federal government can do things to you that your Mom would've gone to jail for, if she'd tried them...?

More specifically:

It takes a Viking Berserker to raze a village, but not before they impregnate all the ladies.

Well, I know they were some tall, ugly, swarthy types with mustaches and Tex-Mex-breath (no dill, TYVM) who had to work themselves into a rage before they could even begin to biologically function, if'n ya know what I mean.

They left a lotta pregnant women behind, but not because they were anybody's soulmates.
