Time to split the Republic
« on: March 30, 2011, 06:30:59 PM »
I say it’s time to split this nation into two sub-countries. The Conservative States in America (CSA) and The Socialist States of America (SSA). Each state would vote on which category they wished the state to be in. It would not be necessary for the states to be in any geographic local. Travel between the states would be the same as today. Commerce would continue to be encouraged between the states. All taxes would be collected by the state, and a portion sent to the Federal Government to provide a few services. The military would be provided by the Fed, same as today, and both sub-countries would enjoy the protection of an umbrella military.
Most Federal programs would cease to exist. Each state would vote on their respective constitutions, specifically outlining what services and programs that would be provided by the taxation within each respective state. In this manner, if California wants free healthcare, free education, gay marriage, unbridled illegal immigration,………… fine. Let them pay for it through taxes collected from that states’ specific population. Should a different state not wish to have all the entitlement programs, and wishes to embrace personal responsibility and accountability,…………. Great. Their taxes would be substantially less.
With such a split system, the ability to change and modify what programs the citizens want would be extremely easy. There could be yearly elections to approve of programs. If a program is not working as advertised, the people could vote it out of existence before it permanently damages the states economy. Each state could set the limits of the terms of their legislators. The people would actually be governing themselves. Micro-managing each state’s government would be easier;  simple  in comparison to the bureaucratic quagmire we currently have for a government.

I am dead serious about this. I know, history tells us we tried this once. But, it was a different time and for different reasons. Today, it would work.

Of course, it would only be a short matter of time before the SSA either went bankrupt, or revolted and joined the CSA.

This will happen, one way or another, sooner or later. I vote for sooner, peacefully. The longer our (lack of) government continues to kick the can down the road, the less likely this will be accomplished without blood shed and chaos.

If this sounds vaguely familiar……………

Take an hour and read the Constitution.

I look forward to everyone's comments.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.
John F. Kennedy

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!
Ronald Reagan
