I noticed this story at The Daily Caller yesterday

    http://dailycaller.com/2011/02/25/government-yard-sale-could-help-bring-down-national-debt /

and heard the phrase again when I was channel surfing this morning and checked Fox News. On Fox, some idiot whose name I didn't catch was suggesting that the national parks could be sold to Disney.

Of course this is all really about ripping off the national government, taxpayers, and future generations, for the immediate profit of the rich.

But they're framing their plan for grand larceny in such cozy language to lull the people they'll be trying to rob.

Yard sale. Just getting rid of junk you don't need to make a little extra cash. And what will be sold is just "crap" anyway, according to the Daily Caller:

Quote
So what kinds of crap can we sell off?

The federal government reportedly owns more than one fourth of the land in the United States. According to the “Budget of the U.S. Government for FY2010,” at the end of FY 2008, the federal government held $767 billion in land, and $421 billion in “mineral rights.”

In addition to land, the Office of Budget and Management reports that Uncle Sam also owns more than $1.17 trillion in fixed reproducible capital (things like buildings and machinery) and $290 billion in inventory.

Yeah, all the federal land and mineral rights are just "crap" that taxpayers shouldn't mind being sold off. And all those buildings and machinery -- who needs them? The people and corporations who'll buy them will be doing us such a big favor...

    :sarcasm:

The BS from the right never stops. The estate tax is the "death tax" and supposedly hurts lots of people. It's only "class warfare" if anyone suggests that the rich start paying slightly more taxes, after their taxes have been reduced so drastically the last few decades that income inequality in the US is among the worst in the world.

And now RWers want to have a "yard sale" to get rid of "crap" like national parks and mineral rights.

Why is this a bad idea?
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."

Of course the channel surfing DUmmie won't admit or didn't know it but the person talking about Disney was a DemRat, and was trying to be sarcastic about the idea.

What about the news artical that Nobama wants to sell off more of the strategic reserve

I don't know how he figures that will help him: having an empty strategic reserve, and $5.50 a gallon gas because he's turned the screws on all of domestic energy production isn't going to reduce the number of folks coming after his mocha ass with torches and pitchforks between now and 2012.

  • Oh snap!
The government owns a lot of land in Nevada, and throughout the west, why can't state residents own this land instead?  What's the big deal?  The government isn't doing anything except 'hoarding' the wide open spaces of the west.

They can pander to the environmentalist by restricting access to that land.
