Unfortunately this sort of thing is to be expected. In the sudden absence of law and order that had always been present the throngs of people who make up the majority of the population, uneducated illiterate laborers and street peddlers have access to these places such as hotels and museums where they have never been allowed to venture in their lives and this is what we get.
When barefoot Achmed grabbed this from the museum he wasn't thinking "Ah, behold Akhenaten, score"! He was thinking "maybe this thing which is small enough to run off with is something I can schlepp off on somebody for a 20 lb bag of rice and some dried fish".
Pretty sad really, at least they're smart enough to know they have been kept in the gutter for thirty years. Let's hope they're smart enough to choose liberty over Sharia and not trade one bunch of thugs for another.
