The Forgotten 99ers -- Abandoned By Their Country

http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2011020504/forgotte...

I was looking for news reports about the "99ers" -- people unemployed for 99 weeks or more, and therefore unable to receive any unemployment benefits -- and noticed that almost no one is covering this. Mostly Examiner.com, MLive, "From the Trenches" and "RantRave." This is a story in itself.

The long-term unemployed are forgotten, a nuisance. Millions of people, unemployed for a very long time, now without even receiving unemployment benefits. The wave of layoffs started just over two years ago (as Wall Street got bailouts used to pay out huge bonuses), so right now, 2 years later, each month another several hundred thousand people drop into this void.

Who are the 99ers? The Congressional Research Service says they are, Older Workers Most Likely to Experience Very Long-Term Unemployment,

Once they have lost a job, older Americans are more likely than any other age group to remain out of work for 99 weeks or more, as calculated in a new report by the Congressional Research Service.

This is a very small bonfire, but I want to point out one thing to the DUmmies.  Thee 99'ers aren't forgotten, they just outlived their usefulness to ObeyWon and the DemonRats.  The extension of benefits was a very small part of their overall spending and was only thrown for political reasons to force the Republicans to vote for their spending bills.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Obama pass an additional 13 weeks of unemployment around December 2010?  I could have sworn he extended unemployment again soon after the elections?  But it was probably done before the 2010 elections.  I can't recall.

Not that that was okay, because it angered me when I heard that.  There is no reason for anyone to be unemployed for 99 weeks.
You may call me Jessica or Jess.

It was 13 months, in exchange for the Bush tax rate extensions.

ETA, the DUmmies say that that doesn't apply to the 99ers.  I don't know about all the intricacies of UI.

11. What will happen to those people?
Well, being one of them, I have some idea.

If you have no personal support system or reserves, you are on your own -- the Katrina effect. There is no safety net! There is not even a hammock made out of dental floss. Does that need to be underlined, emboldened and repeated several times?

followed by several paragraphs of  :sosad:

What the hell is welfare?  Food stamps?  Section 8 housing?  Heating assistance?   At any rate, even a tiny child can understand that fable about the ant and the grasshopper.  Non-planning results in consequences.

True but it did not apply to those who already hit the 99-week wall.

Do DUmmies really want to fix the unemployment problem and raise the standard of living in this country....HELL NO.

Want to fix things? Throw all the illegals out and there will be an abundance of jobs. A shortage of labor will cause a rise in wages with no need for minimum wage laws. Stop welfare, foodstamps, section 8 etc. etc. and people will have to work or else. With the reduction in entitlements and an increase in taxable income staying in this country and being spent in this country, we would be on the road to the greatest prosparity ever seen in this country.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Not true....... I've not been able to find suitable employment in almost two years. I also wasn't eligible for unemployment.

You and me both.  I've been "forced" to start a business - in this horrible 0-conomy, no less - in order to create a job for myself.

I suppose I could thank little Lord Zero for the impetus to push me in this direction, but I think instead I'll just flip him a big ol' :bigbird:

No, there's a job out there, you're just in the position to pick and chose. You may not make 50 bucks an hour or whatever you were accustomed to, but you can't tell me you couldn't find a job if ya had to.

Hell 3 years ago I took at least a 50% cut in pay because I could no longer wear my nail bags. I found a job the second day I put myself on the market! Did I make as much as I was accustomed, of course not, but I got a job!

Perhaps I'm a little different as I have educated myself in several fields, but a little elbow grease is always in demand.

Did y'all happen to notice that poor, poor Newest Reality still somehow manages to pony up for the internet connection to whine on a moonbat bitching board?
