Patriot Act extension fails in the House by seven votes
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:54:31 AM »
House Republicans suffered an embarrassing setback Tuesday when they fell seven votes short of extending provisions of the Patriot Act, a vote that served as the first small uprising of the party's tea-party bloc.

The bill to reauthorize key parts of the counter-terrorism surveillance law, which expire at the end of the month, required a super-majority to pass under special rules reserved for non-controversial measures.

But it fell short of the required two-thirds after 26 Republicans bucked their leadership, eight of them freshman lawmakers elected in November's midterm elections. With most Democrats opposing the extension, the final tally was 277 members in favor of extension, and 148 opposed.

Obama wanted it extended until 2013 instead of the usual 1 year extension. WTF?

Mine (Amash) voted "no".  I sent him this:

I am pleased to read this morning of your vote of "Nay" on HR 514, extending some of the most liberty-strangling provisions of the over-hastily and badly crafted "USA PATRIOT Act".  Please continue, in the face of the threats of terrorism, invasion, crime etc., to extend to the American People the greatest share of Liberty and the greatest capacity for self-defense possible.  STANDARD BOILERPLATE: The next Michigan Primary is in 384 days. We, who elected you, are watching.

Outstanding.  That's one piece of legislation I absolutely hated.

I'm sure ObeyWon will continue using regulatory powers where he can to circumvent this.

The DUmmies have bitched about this every since it was passed. I guess we can watch them jump the fence to the other side now.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Under a Republican leadership this act protected us from terror.
Under democrat leadership this act was used to repress the people.

If you don't think you'll like how it would be used when the other side has it in their arsenal, then the damned law should never have been passed in the first place.  The only reason we lucked out as long as we have with this freedom-robbing Congressional cluster-****, is that George W. Bush, for all of his other weaknesses, was basically an honest person.

I am so happy to see this go.

Mine voted nay, but I'm a little torn on this one. The DUmmies gave "W" absolute hell on this for tapping foreigners phones that were tied to terrorist funding. Many of those calls were routed to American Muslims.

It sure seemed to me like a good tool to identify those who we provide all of the benefits of our free society, yet overtly try to undermine our gubmint in order to help our enemies. These assholes were funding those that kill American Soldiers!!!!

Perhaps it needs to be rewritten, but we certainly need somethin' similar!

They are the worst of the worst in my opinion!
