NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte announced his retirement at Yankee Stadium, saying he no longer has the "hunger" to pitch another season.

With wife Laura sitting at his side, Pettitte said Friday he had conflicting feelings about leaving the game. He said "it was an easy decision, but it wasn't an easy decision." As recently as two weeks ago, he thought he would return for another season.

The 38-year-old left-hander said at a news conference that his body was in shape to pitch but "my heart's not where it needs to be."

"It just didn't feel right for me anymore," he said. "I didn't have the hunger, the drive I felt like I needed."

This creates some major problems for the Yankees' rotation.  I read somewhere on Friday that suggested that, if the Yankees consented to paying the rest of the contract, that they could probably trade for Barry Zito.

So the other shoe falls for the yanks...
They missed a few opportunities to expand their bullpen waiting for Lee to make a decision.They should not have been so arrogant to think they  can buy any player they want.Even as early as the 3rd game of the acls they were bragging that they would own Lee next season.

I sometimes wonder if Cliff Lee drug his feet on purpose (payback for the treatment his wife received at Yankee stadium ) knowing the yanks bullpen was in potential trouble with the possible retirement of pettitte.

oh yeah....GO RANGERS!!! :yahoo:

Well, as a Mets' fan, the Yankees did improve their bullpen greatly through the addition of Rafael Soriano.  But yes, one of the reasons stated for Cliff Lee's decision to return to Philly was the Yankees fans' treatment of Lee's wife during the ALCS.  Hey, Skankees fans--what goes around comes around.
