I have a Kindle app on my laptop at home (shhh..this is the "work" computer  O-)), and I thought I would do some "book" shopping during an upcoming break.  I know at least two books I want are available on Kindle-- W's and Tom Clancy's latests-- and what I'm wondering is if I can download the books here, put them on a thumbdrive, and take them home where I can read them.

Or maybe I should just get back to work and do my book-shopping on my own time   :p

Not real familiar with e-Books, but you SHOULD be able to do that. I would download them directly to the thumb drive, though.

If your computer with Kindle is registered with Amazon, then you shouldn't even need the thumbdrive, assuming that the other computer is connected to the internet.  Your account will make them show up automatically regardless of which computer you use.  They call it their "whispersync" technology.

What she said. The ads they've been throwing at me the last few weeks on TV have been touting their buy-it-once-read-it-anywhere feature.

I've been thinking of asking for a Kindle for Christmas but haven't because I read an article in the paper last week that said Google is coming out with a book purchasing thingie too.

The article said that Kindle only works with Amazon, but that the other "readers" will work with everyone who is providing the book purchasing. According to the article, Google will not only be working with the same publishers as Amazon, but also others. The article did not have Google reccomending any particular reader, just that it would not be compatible with the Kindle because Amazon would not allow it, even though Google had asked to be associated with them.

I have seen the "Nook" ones advertised on tv and in store ads, and that the Nook one does color. Kindle doesn't?

Does anyone here, know a lot about these readers?

Thanks Bijou. I had participated in that thread, and I just went back and reread it. I thought the nook was brand new, and didn't remember reading about it in the thread.

I'm still not "sold" on getting one, but it's getting really hard to find new reading material in the paperback section at different stores and I've wondered if it was because so many people are switching to e-readers and not buying the books in the stores.

I was thinking Kindle until I read the article regarding Google.

I'd really like an ipad, but that's not remotely in the budget right now.  :(

There are lots of free ebook converters.  (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_conversion) I use Calibre, but now that you've reminded me I'll go see what's new.  :-)  Check out mobileread.com- they cover just about everything.

It's really better to stay away from proprietary  pieces of technology. I like the Creative Zen over the iPod, although the iPOd touch is quite nice.

Apple is bad about their proprietary licenses.
