My only real problem with the article is the quote at the end. But it's a big problem..."Perhaps... when the country has found its moral bearings AGAIN..." The Schell quote is just another example of rationalizing evil and identifying with the clan nonsense. It perfectly exemplifies that proto-fascist belief (so prevalent in the U.S.) that times were once better and if only we could get back to our principles (moral compass) things we would be OK."... found it's moral bearings AGAIN..."My favorite part of the quote is "again"? When did the U.S. ever have moral bearings at all? My grandfather was an American Indian. What was yours? The truth is that the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were never intended to be more than TALKING POINTS to convince a bunch of idiots to go fight someone else's war and submit to a capitalist authority. All men created equal? Unless you're black, native, a woman, don't own property...The nature of this country has not changed for 200 years. To cite an example from the current times, being in a state of war isn't all that unusual.I'm 31 years old. In my lifetime, the U.S. has been officially involved in 5 wars (Invasion of Panama, Iraq I, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq II). And I can't even begin to figure how many CIA back coups, bombings, "combat operations" and paramilitary stuff the U.S. has perpetrated during my lifetime.America was founded on bullshit and still is bullshit. And I'm sorry, but if even the dissenters pay homage to the founding myths, there's really no hope of change until America finally loses a war in a big way.E. It's good to have you here!No love lost for the poisoning and dangerous myth of American exceptionalism here. In fact, I personally see it as the ROOT of everything that is wrong with this country, and I mean it.The OP (Opening Poster) wrote a lot on the subject btw, if I remember correctly; and I'm guessing that he would mainly agree with the point that you made.I hope you're here to stay btw; your perspective is refreshing and much needed. See you around?....
