A South Carolina mother is upset her 14-year-old daughter was driven from school to a clinic for a birth control shot.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the woman was outraged. Her name was not released.

The student was taken to the clinic after classes at Burke High by a worker for the Carolina Empowerment Group, a nonprofit organization working to increase awareness of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

State law allows health services for minors without parental consent, although contraceptives may not be distributed at schools.

Burke principal Charles Benton says the nonprofit is not supposed to take students to clinics. But he says the services provided by the group at Burke are important because of high teen pregnancy rates.

That's why they made it available in the first place. So that teens who were afraid to go to their parents can get birth control. It's better than being 14 years old and pregnant.

Does it have to be one or the other? Who the **** made you the arbiter of what's best for someone else's child?

It's about protecting the teenager. If the girl believes she is going to have sex and wants to protect herself, she should be able to do that. She may believe her mother wouldn't allow it. The girl should be empowered to protect herself.

This is about a teenager wanting to protect herself because she did't believe her mother would approve. Getting the shot is a far better alternative than being 14 years old and pregnant.

This is wrong on so many levels....

1 ) a minor child is the responsibility of the parent(s) or guardian(s) - in nearly every other circumstance, the parent would be required to give consent.

2 ) a minor child engaged in sex is considered by law to be raped - either raped by someone who has committed a sex crime against a child, or a statutory rapist if the partner is also a minor. Both of these acts are crimes, and will be prosecuted by the state regardless if the parents agree to prosecute or not - yet the very same state is providing a service to a sexually active child that would allow them to continue on with the illegal behavior without repercussions...  

3 ) a birth control shot does nothing to stop STDs.

Here's my problem with keeping the parent out of the loop when it comes to giving a child an injection.

This injection is essentially a medication. Medications have contraindications. Cases where if you have (fill in the blank) you should not take the medication. Medications also have side effects.

Does the child (and at 14 years old she is indeed a child) have the maturity and knowledge level to properly deal with the contraindications and side effects?

What happens if the child (and at 14 years old she is indeed a child) does have some sort of reaction to the medication and as a result the parent takes the child for medical care? In most cases one of the first things a doctor wants to know is if the patient is on any medication. In this case the parent doesn't know about the medication so it will not be mentioned by the parent. Will the child (and at 14 years old she is indeed a child) be responsible enough to confess taking the medication to the doctor? Keep in mind that this is a child (and at 14 years old she is indeed a child) that apparently isn't responsible enough to keep her legs closed.
