rainy (1000+ posts) Wed Oct-13-10 08:39 PMOriginal messageGoogling topics seems to not turn up progressive points of view on the first few pages. I've been noticing this lately. When I'm trying to find out something like for instance googling "social security is not bankrupt." It takes many pages to get to the progressive sites. Has anyone else noticed that? It's getting harder and harder to find what I'm looking for these days.

Google ignores both "is" and "not" so what it sees is Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 08:51 PM by MineralMansocial security bankrupt. That is true if you don't enclose the phrase in quotation marks in the actual search. If you enclose the same search in quotation marks, you will get a different set of results.Google's algorithms ignore short, commonly used words. If you add the quotation marks, it reads them and includes them and searches for the entire phrase. It's not a diabolical thing at all. It's a necessary part of their normal algorithm to pick out the pertinent words. Google doesn't actually understand what you have typed. It parses the search phrase using an algorithm.

Thanks for the tip.Printer Friendly | Permalink | Reply | Top hollowdweller (1000+ posts) Wed Oct-13-10 09:02 PMResponse to Reply #45. I have totally noticed this especially in the last 4 or 5 months. Sometimes when just researching some fact the first 3 pages will be nothing but wingnut spin on whatever fact I'm trying to see.I even thought about emailing the DNC about it but Kaine seems so lame I'm not sure they'd even look into it.

...despite all the right-wing rhetoric, Social Security is not going bankrupt. That's a lie! The truth is that the Social Security Trust Fund has run surpluses for the last quarter-century. Today's $2.5 trillion cushion is projected to grow to $4 trillion in 2023. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, experts in this area, say Social Security will be able to pay every nickel owed to every eligible beneficiary until 2039. Got that? In case you don't, let me repeat it. The people who have studied this issue most thoroughly and have no political bias report that Social Security will be able to pay out all benefits to every eligible beneficiary for the next twenty-nine years. It is true that by 2039, if nothing is changed, Social Security will be able to pay out only about 80 percent of benefits. That is why it is important that Congress act soon to make sure Social Security is as strong in the future as it is today. The hatred of Social Security from the right-wing antigovernment crowd is based on the fact that Social Security, a government program, has been enormously successful in accomplishing its mission. For seventy-five years, in good times and bad, Social Security has provided financial security for tens of millions of Americans.
From Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont. This guy is a whack job in my opinion. Reminds me of Bwany Fwank, another winner. He states that SS is safe until 2039??
I'm sure that the DUmors want to know where Bernie gets his weed from. That's some strong shit.
