One of the big problems in stopping this oil flow is the depth at which it is happening. In shallower water or on land this would have been done and over with in a matter of days.

But my point still stands. Shit happens. Spills happen. If you're drilling in ANWR and you have a 4-5 day spill, do you think it's going to go over well because it didn't last as long? Or do you think the greenies will come out swinging. It's not any easier to clean up land than it is water - in some cases much harder.

It's a hell of a lot easier and quicker to cap a blown-out well on the surface than it is in a mile of water........

Which begs the question of why BP was drilling 70 miles offshore, in 5,000 feet of water to begin with......and the answer is......because the same government that is standing around wringing their collective hands and whining to a sympathetic media......won't allow them to drill either on land, or in shallow water, where these emergencies can be dealt with quickly and with minimal damage.

I will agree with you to the extent that shit happens, and no drilling operation is going to be 100% problem-free, but it is the price that we have to pay........and don't get me started on the "wean ourselves off of oil" bullshit.......because it is just that.....bullshit......

I saw an article on the news last week about some truck mounted oil/ water separators. I fail to understand why those couldn't be mounted to many boats and go around and suck up the oil and dispense the water. Then, pump the oil onto a barge. IMO, BP has majorly dropped the ball on this one, in many instances, regulations aside. The Government has the ability to vacate or suspend those regulations in an emergency. This is an emergency, without any doubt.

Our government is too busy trying to find who to blame in all this.

I heard this morning that this whole mess was Cheney's fault....because he worked for Haliburton and pushed for de-regulation of drilling constraints.....

Whatever happened to "the buck stops HERE!" or  personal accountability. It seems as if this country has been too busy blamestorming for the last decade to pay attention to the real issues. After a year, I don't think the past President should be held accountable for things that just up and happen, like this oil rig blowing up.

BP Approves Testing of Oil Separation Device Test

BP has agreed to test Ocean Therapy Solutions' centrifugal processing device that separates oil from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. John Houghtaling, CEO of Houghtaling and Williams (New Orleans, LA, USA), received word this afternoon after speaking with BP President Doug Suttles. Houghtaling partnered with movie star Kevin Costner and other local investors to promote the machines. Houghtaling and Costner formed Ocean Therapies in the wake of the Horizon oil spill in the Gulf.

Device only gets 99% of the oil...leaves 1% so it ain't good enough for the government....the government should be held to such high standards.
