excerpt

There’s nothing wrong with the fact Debra Blessman kept secret from her students the name of the film she would require them to watch and analyze during finals week at Francis Howell High School.  Today, however, the teacher might be wishing she had not kept her superiors in the St. Charles, Mo., school district in the dark about her plans to base final exams on the Michael Moore film, “Sicko“, a trailer for which appears below.

Oh, gee.  The movie was not properly submitted to the school for approval.  What a surprise!

That is like saying Shakespeare plays made into movies are not literature.  A masterpiece like Sicko tops anything that the pathetic loser Shakespeare could come up with.  It should be mandated in every school!  How are we supposed to educate our children if they don't watch the most important filmmaker of our lifetimes!?!?!  In fact he is the most important filmmaker in history I am pretty sure.
All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.

Since when is a film considered Literature?

There are some that I would place in that category......off the top of my head.....

"Gone With the Wind"

"Doctor Zhivago"

"Out of Africa"

"Casablanca"

And depending on your preferences, perhaps "Dances With Wolves"

My son's grade watched Schindler's List.  Some parents complained but were vetoed. The students said "seeing the atrocities made it real", instead of pretending to read about it.  Teachers said the students were more involved than ever before.

"Gone With the Wind"

One teacher requires reading this- and busts the kids who watch the movie instead of reading the book. :lmao:

Since when is a film considered Literature?

Remember, all of that classic literature at one time was just popular entertainment. Film is the short story of the 20th century. When the novel first started to become popular in the early to mid 1800s, the genre was considered obscene and a collosal waste of time.

Of course, I'm by no means defending propaganda in the classroom, but some movies, especially the great ones, hit on the same themes as some classic literature.
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

Is it just me or do others study both sides of an situation ??

Things get complicated when one has to make a decision on somethings in life, sort of like the father in Fiddler On The Roof when he debated with himself and God.  ----But on the other hand.---

Much less stress if one just takes a tunnel vision stand and follows blindly someone Else's beliefs. This is not a good road to follow.

We are not a pack of dogs or wolves that follow to the death our leader.   We are human, we have to make for ourselves decisions that may go against the experts, teachers, our faith or traditions.

Sometimes we have to decide what is the lesser of two evils.

People need to know and understand themselves first before they can condemn others, criticize them or build a hatred towards others that they know nothing about.

Example,   teaching kids in first grade about SEX of any kind--good or bad is sick, this is like giving an infant a pork chop before they have teeth.

This young woman was a Senior in Highschool and old enough to understand both sides of a problem.  The best teaching is to take a student that has firm beliefs and counter them,  the result will be either their beliefs become even stronger or they awaken to the fact that nothing is absolute for all people.
