Oil-rich Venezuela gripped by economic crisis

"The government is paralyzed, unable to handle the situation -- and there are no fiscal plans to deal with the crisis," said José Guerra, a former Central Bank economist who directs the economics department at Central University in Caracas, the capital. "Our situation is unbelievable, because we have one of the biggest reserves of oil in the world, thermal-electrical and hydroelectric sources."

......

Venezuela's performance stands in stark contrast to the rest of Latin America, where some central banks worry about overheating economies in 2010. In Peru, Chile and Brazil, all of which embrace globalization, growth could indeed go well beyond 4 percent, the IMF says. Venezuela, economists say, stands out -- its economic policies marked by the nationalization of industries and stringent currency controls.

"The reason Venezuela is contracting is because private activity is contracting," Augusto de la Torre, the World Bank's chief economist for Latin America, said in Washington last week. "What we're seeing in Venezuela is a phenomenon where productivity, private activity and private business is falling."

Too disjointed and meandering to bring comments over...please take a look at the apologies for socialism and communism on the thread though.
Really eye opening.

Hugo is tinkering and meddling in the economy. Thats been happening for 10 years and the effects are being felt.

They have food rationing.

They have regular power and water blackouts.

It will not get any better until Chavez and his Cubans are gone.

North Korea has about fifty years on Venezuela.  Ditto for East Germany.  There's no shortage of examples of the failure of centralized control of an economy and government.

Like I said earlier, nobody ever died from too much freedom.  Liberals, socialists, and DUmmies seem to think otherwise despite all evidence to the contrary.

One Venezuela blog I read they had posts about some of the larger markets having margarine and others mentioned that a store had milk, but only powdered milk and there was a 2-bag limit. People who didn't want milk were buying them for others.

This is all Bush's fault.

This thread has been up at the DUmp for three days, with over a hundred replies. It's curious that poor, stupid Beth hasn't shown up to support her man Yugo. She's been missing for days. So has coach......

I could not imagine power and water blackouts as a way of life. Where the cops are thugs and the sidewalks and buses are unsafe even in the day time. Where inflation is higher than the pay hikes, and the military gets the highest pay hikes (25% this year, although inflation will be higher).

Looks like Hugo ain't the guy to make socialism work either.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Are you suggestion that coach and beth are having a tryst? :)

All kidding aside, it's really not like Beth to miss a "Ven" (what she calls it) thread.  Something clearly has happened.
I don't think I can stomach reading the pro-communism posts over there.
