There were a number of would-be individuals in those days that tried to claim divine or secular liberation for Israel.
Barabas was one such individual.
In 135 AD the Jews and Christians were united against Rome until Rabbi Akiva declared the Jewsish general Simeon to be Bar Kochba, a title with messianic overtures. The Christians deserted the movement because they already had a messiah.
Flavius Josephus chronicles much of this in his "Wars of the Jews."
Of course, when it comes to "dime a dozen saviors" I'm curious about the revelry surrounding Clinton's 1st inauguration, the sense of desperate urgency of the Kerry campaign and some half not-white guy taking up space in the Oval office today.
