One year after seeing his presidential ambitions extinguished in an overwhelming defeat, Arizona Sen. John McCain is launching a scorched-earth campaign aimed at incinerating a reelection challenge from J.D. Hayworth, the conservative former Arizona congressman and radio talk show host.

McCain is attempting, with a series of hardball tactics, to cut Hayworth down before his campaign even gets off the ground. He’s mounted a concerted effort during the past month to push Hayworth off the airwaves, run an ad targeting Hayworth on his own radio station and warned him through emissaries that going through with a bid to unseat McCain would be a serious mistake.

One McCain source said the campaign to brand Hayworth as a consummate earmarker was only beginning.

“That effort has just started. They are going to highlight all the crap he voted for,” said the source. “[McCain is] going to turn this into a referendum on who is the best protector of your money.”

The McCain effort to shoot down Hayworth has also taken place behind the scenes, according to several sources, with McCain allies warning Hayworth against a campaign. “I know some party folks have come to J.D. and said, ‘This is not good for you,’” said one person familiar with the effort.

Having had the misfortune of working as a volunteer on this clown's re-election bid back in '98 (generic Arizona GOP volunteer), this clown is only a tough guy with folks who can't/won't fight back.  Kinda like when he slugged a - damned near 90-some odd year old - "esteemed colleague" on the Senate floor.  Or when he shoved around a campaign volunteer who set his mike "too high" at a speechifying event in Phoenix.

Yeah...I should go look up more about Hayworth. Something tells me I might not be entirely pleased. But I know he's tough on the illegals, so that's good enough for me...so far.

Oh, and he's got some name recognition. Which is shallow, but I'd be a fool if I didn't realize how important that is.

Problem is, you USED your military American Hero status to further YOUR personal political ambitions which basically did very little to help the voters you were supposed to serve. Essentially, your actions hurt and bastardized other military heros because YOU continually attached your military service record to your personal political campaigns.

Grrrrr. You guys should hear the fuggin' negative ad's Mickey is running against Hayworth. The latest has some smarmy b!tch pointing out that J.D. got voted out of office for ear marks. Then it goes on to claim that McCain will fight for Arizona. Buh? That dust farting s.o.b. wants a fuggin' amnesty for ALL the illegals. He's the rump ranger that co-authored McCain Feingold...damn.

The only way to get this tool out of office is to get the seniors to wake up long enough to pull the right lever. I don't know if J.D. is the way to go, but he's the best shot we have so far.

And another McCain commercial is on the radio. DAMN!

This isn't a challenge, as I'm not really familiar with the details of the law, but I thought the restrictions on individual contributions were struck down within weeks of the law's passage.......along with several of the other provisions......the only parts left were restrictions on corporations, and the ban on candidate-specific ads 60 days before an election....which this most recent decision deep-sixed......

My understanding on the history of this is that the restrictions on an individual's rights were the first to go before the USSC - as President Bush was expecting they would.  Where his little orchestration fell off the page, was where he was expecting the Court to strike them down, a pre-Roberts/Alito court allignment with Justice O'Conner actually UPHELD THEM.

That's what we get when we go along with some linguini spine politician's notion that it's the USSC's job to determine whether legislation is constitutional or not, when in fact all three branches of the government are given authority  - and put under oath - to protect the constitution from undermining legislation.  Congress wrote that monstrosity, but President Bush was asleep at the switch when it crossed his desk.
