Amtrak "Train From Hell" Delayed Almost 24 Hours

It was "the train from hell," said one passenger.

Arriving almost 24 hours behind schedule, Amtrak's California Zephyr arrived in Chicago with a trainload of passengers who described themselves as "tired, hungry and stinky."

The train, which left Sacramento five days ago, was delayed by severe weather and numerous mishaps on route and pulled into Union Station more than 19 hours late.

One delay was caused by the train striking a pickup truck in Iowa. But the biggest problem, the rail carrier says, was the weather. "There is a pass in Nebraska between two hills, " spokesman Marc Magliari says, "where the snow drifts were more than two stories tall.".....

I once got a train from Venice to Athens which arrived 24 hours late. It was crowded and in the height of summer with semi functioning toilets was a tad stinky too. The only upside to a very delayed train is at least you are going somewhere albeit slowly, on balance I prefer that to being stuck in an airport waiting.

Four days under NORMAL circumstances to get from Sacramento to Chicago?

I can drive it faster than that.

2046 miles by road.  When I moved out here, the first two days I drove from OC to Knoxville, TN.  36 hours, 2200 miles.  Get someone to split the driving with you, and it would have been about 28-30 hours.
